Details

Bug 1341300 looks to investigate adding common words to the Lithium Dictionary. This bug is about being able to manually correct words flagged as incorrect without closing the checker. Currently the only way to place a non listed word in that space is close the checker, edit the document and start again. That is a particularly poor user experience
The built in spell checker is not currently available see Bug1338018

This should be resolved when we take care of bug 1344300, which will take care of the dictionary for search suggestions, article edits and everything related to web copy.
