Mac OS X "Collapse Toolbar" button doesn't work in Mozilla Help. It doesn't appear to have any code behind it. 2002040313

Menus are not changed to context of Mozilla Help in the front, and none of them do anything although they are selectable and flash the menu when the item or key equivalent is chosen. Help window modally blocks all Mozilla-specific commands and menus without any evidence this is the case. The only commands that do work are those in the OS X Mozilla menu, and the basic windowing icons.
Moz 1.4 final, OS X 10.2.6 The Help window is really deeply screwy. It forces itself to be the topmost Mozilla window and refuses to be unfocused. Minimize only works for a second, then Help pops back up. Browser windows and menu items are unusable.

Severity: minor → major
Summary: Mac OS X "Collapse Toolbar" button doesn't work in Mozilla Help → Mac OS X Mozilla Help is modal, prevents browser use ("Collapse Toolbar", "Minimize", etc don't work)

Anyone got any leads on fixing this? Could this be caused by alwaysRaised somehow becoming modal on MacOS? danm, do you know if this kind of issue is already reported? I don't have access to a mac, so I couldn't help in finding any leads.

Also Macless am I. However, the reporter is no doubt mistaken about the cause of this bug. Modal windows on the Mac platform show up as sheets, and all of the comments in this bug make it sound as if the Help window is a full-blown, top-level window (sheet help would be pretty awful, eh?) This bug has nothing to do with modality or alwaysRaised. The Help window has no menubar. This is a variant of, and has the same cause as, bug 21296; a basic architectural gaff that we've had no response to for four years. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 21296 ***

Hmm. "gaff, e-less: a spear or spearhead for taking fish or turtles." You know what I mean.

Not a dupe of bug 21296. Beyond the usual menu bar problem, the Help window's collapse and minimize widgets don't work. Also, it refuses to stay beneath other windows. The rest of Mozilla unusable until you close Help.

Unlike the other menuless windows in bug 21296, Help refuses to get out of the way.

"refuses to stay beneath other windows" is as-designed, and that *is* the fault of alwaysRaised. It's the menubar problem, bug 21296, that makes this an issue. Unless you just don't like alwaysRaised windows but despite comment 9 I think we're not going to lose that. See bug 219865 and especially bug 219865 comment 7. However, "window's collapse and minimize widgets don't work," you got me there. Sorry. Missed that when I closed the bug. On the first issue, it think it would be relatively easy to hack it so that windows without menubars on the Mac won't be alwaysRaised, pending a fix for bug 21296, which ain't forthcoming. On the second issue, that'll need help from someone with a Mac.

This needs to be reassigned. Obviously a problem in XP Apps (not sure where in XP Apps it should go). Daniel: Can you reassign this to the appropriate component?

Alright. Simon is the only Mac developer active outside the Camino arena that I know of. Simon, feel free of course to keep the hot potato bouncing. I've split this bug's two complaints into two bugs. See bug 221813 for the other half. This bug is now "Mac Help window's collapse and minimize widgets don't work," as described in the original comment.

DanM, thanks for sorting this out. The minimize failure is a side effect of bug 221813. Technically it does minimize for a few milliseconds, then alwaysRaised makes it jump back up. Collapse Toolbar, as the submitter stated, is completely inactive.
