RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1359297

People

(Reporter: smfeatherstone, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/58.0.3029.81 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

On April 26, 2017 updated Gmail password at gmail in a browser. Thunderbird on Windows 10 asked on next retrieval for an updated password. For this, a Thunderbird window comes up and looks like a browser to enter the email, press next and then enter the password. The password was successfully updated and mail services continued even in the morning of April 27th after the computer was shut down and restarted.

On April 27, Thunderbird was accessed for the same account on Mac Sierra and the same method of updating the password was attempted but the password that was set the day before was forgotten. Reset the password at gmail using a browser and then was able to apply that new password in Thunderbird on the Mac.

Back to the Windows 10 machine, Thunderbird requests the password and displays the email address in a Thunderbird browser window which is a Gmail portal. The Next button ceased to function as did all of the links on that page except for the language selection. Clicking on Help did eventually crash Thunderbird altogether.

Checked and then installed the update to 52.0.1 after noticing the error. Restarted the computer and same error occurred when Thunderbird opened and and needed an updated password. Went into Tools>Options>Security to the password manager and the passwords listed incoming and outgoing were actually the original passwords and had not been updated per the Thunderbird browser portal although newer passwords had been applied and successfully used since then. Edited those passwords to the new one, restarted Thunderbird to make sure the changes were applied and the Thunderbird browser-portal still opened needing the password. The passwords were successfully updated in Options but those apparently weren't what Thunderbird was using anyways.

Made sure to install updated Java to the computer and restarted and tried again to no avail. Have not gone back to the Mac to check the passwords stored there or to see if it is still working or what version of Thunderbird it was using, but it was not giving any problem. Neither machine has Firefox.

Found a question that is about 4 days old posted on April 23. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1157498

There is something going on with that forum to where I cannot post replies or register for an account to ask a question. As I was working through that issue a commenter on that thread mentioned opening a bugzilla bug. There are 14 other users who have clicked on the Same Issue button and there is another user's debug information there as well.

Actual results:

Thunderbird web-portal pops up asking for Gmail username to click Next and update Gmail password. Clicking Next does nothing:

Expected results:

The Next button would have came to a screen to update the password so that mail could be sent and received. A secondary bug was discovered concerning password storage in the Options where Gmail passwords are not updated or retrieved from that location in Thunderbird.
If Next button did not respond, that is bug 1359297
Component: Untriaged → Account Manager

Thank you. Hopefully they will explain this on the support thread mentioned.

I believe 1359297 points to the answer in another: bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1359383

Basically, I think it says:

Due to Google not catching an error if the history is disabled, the oauth login dialog no longer allows you to click on next. Enabling history fixes the issue and should be fine since it is a confined browser element.

Not sure what that means but thank you for finding that! Would it be a bug that the passwords saved in Thunderbird were not updated and not used in authentication?

As mentioned before, I cannot sign in or use the support forum at this time so if any are following the link to this bug from that one poster, please update to make it simpler at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1157498 if you can understand these bug reports. I'm not sure if this falls under the guidelines or if it might get removed from bugzilla but would like to reach out to make some sense of it.

cheers

Not sure if this is right place for this, but we have been having trouble adding gmail to Thunderbird the last few days too. We do this for customers so doing quite often. Here is some info that may assist with the problem:

- On our computers in Michigan, adding Gmail account to Thunderbird is still not working. If we go to Gmail on the web to log in, we still see the notice that Gmail will have new way to sign in soon.

- On our computers in Ohio, we are now able to add Gmail accounts to Thunderbird. It should be noted that we now see new log in on the web for Gmail vs "new way to log in coming soon"

My guess is that Gmail/Google is rolling out the new log-in in different areas a little at a time. Once it is updated in an area, Gmail accounts should add to Thunderbird again. We have been testing and did this with several accounts and had the same outcome each time. Our tests have been on Windows 10 Anniversary edition and Creators and we have worked with both the latest and previous edition of Thunderbird.
