my friend lost his address book due to corruption at the end of the file, but
the only symptom of this corruption was the fact that his personal address book
stopped showing up in the address book window. There should be some sort of
alert that indicates to the user that their address book has been corrupted, so
at least its not this silent failure, where the user doesn't know what happened
to his/her data.

We got the same here (Mozilla 1.3.1).
Somehow, HTML COde of a page being displayed ended up
in the Adress book!
