From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.0rc1) Gecko/20020417 BuildID: 2002041712 in the mail client messages are marked as read even if they are only previewed. There should be an option to only mark the message as read if it is actually opened. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. preview a message 2. watch it get marked as read 3. write bug report/feature request Actual Results: the message was marked as read Expected Results: nothing. it should show you the preview without changing properties of the message.
If you select a message with the message pane open, yes we mark it read because we do load the message content -- we don't have a content "preview". If you don't want to mark messages read but just want to peruse the headers, close the message pane then you can open the messages you explicitly want to open.

Right, I'd like to peruse the actual message without it being marked as read. Perhaps an option to select either behavior?
The other problem is that you can't stop reading your unread mail. Once you delete a message the next one is automatically marked as read.
