In Thunderbird I fixed this by adding:

.titlebar-button {
  padding: initial;
}

With bug 1424926 fixed, the controls are no longer bigger than normal, but they are still blurry.

This is a comparison between Thunderbird and Firefox. If we want the controls to be like other GNOME applications, we should make additional adjustments.

With bug 1427999 fixed, I'm still seeing the problem depicted in comment 2.

The HiDPI issue may be a combination of Bug 1431337 and Bug 1433068. Also probably needs some fiddle with positioning. It also depends on Bug 1408335.
