Details

Every action which resulted with Mozilla 1.0 RC1 in a new window (like opening a link in a new window, or for instance pressing ctrl-e to edit the current window) does not give a new window. When I click on 'windows' in the menu bar, then I see more than one window listed, but these cannot be made visible. After I reinstalled Mozilla 1.0 RC1 is was working again normally. After reinstalling RC2 again the windows did not appear any more.

however this seems to be a duplicate of bug 143712
Reporter: Have you installed RC2 over Rc1 ? If yes, can you uninstall RC1, delete all files in c:\program\mozilla.org and reinstall RC2 ? -> BG (this is never Layout)

I also have this problem when run as a restricted user (ie, "Users" group), but not when run as an Administrator. (on win2k) The extra items under the "Windows" menu have no caption text next to them. This was NOT installed over an older copy.
Depends on: 143712
I had this problem as well. I had problems with the net stub install, so I downloaded the RC2 zip file, uninstalled RC1 in the control panel, unzipped RC2 in a new directory, moved my prefs.js just in case, and tried to run Mozilla. Result: I am unable to open more than one window. If I try to open mail / news, the cursor changes briefly (hourglass) then returns to the default. If I set preferences to open both the browser and mail / news at start-up, I only get the browser. After this happens I can close the browser window, but I need to go into the Win2k task manager to kill the "mozilla" process if I want to start another session. I am running Win2k as a user with admin privs, and I normally use the Pinball theme. Changing themes had no effect on this problem for me. I am currently back to using RC1.
It was asked whether I installed RC2 over RC1. My answer: first I installed RC2 over RC1 and discovered the single window problem. Then I uninstalled RC2 via control panel and deleted whole mozilla.org directory; reinstalled RC2 and still had the same problem. I am logged in as a user with admin privileges. I use Theme 'LittleMozilla', but changing to 'classic' did not solve the problem. I experience also the problem that after closing (the only mozilla window) that still a mozilla process is running. This has to be stopped via the Task Manager. I tried tabbed browsing; this works fine, but links on some web pages automatically open new windows, so this is not a bypass. For me RC2 is not a workable version; I am back to RC1.
have you installed a third-party Theme ? If yes: Please uninstall all third-party Themes and restart Mozilla.
After uninstalling all third party themes the bug disappears. I had RC1 again installed on my PC. I first uninstalled all third party themes in RC1 via 'edit->Preferences- >Appearance. During uninstalling the second third party theme RC1 crashed (data of this crash is automatically sent at 020513 around 7:25 GMT+1). I uninstalled RC1 via control panel and deleted mozilla.org directory and installed RC2. RC2 started up with the classic theme. I checked whether all third party themes were uninstalled; this was the case. Now everything seems to work correctly! I did a ctrl-e and a new window appeared. I did an 'open link in new window' and also this worked fine.
Uninstalling the third-party themes worked for me too :-) Incidentally, I can reinstall the Pinball theme again afterwards and everything appears to work normally.
