I'm not sure whether this is a regression of Bug 223909, or it was only partially implemented. I just found myself taking a screenshot and wanting to paste it directly as an attachment to an email. However, this doesn't work for me at the moment. Steps to reproduce: 1. Copy an image to the clipboard, either using Alt+PrintScreen or from a graphics app. 2. Open a plain-text email composition window. 3. Attempt to paste the image using Ctrl+V. 4. Attempt to paste the image using the menus. Actual result: 3. Nothing happens. 4. Paste commands are disabled. Expected result: Attach the image to the email as a PNG file. (Even better would be to open a dialog enabling the user to enter a filename and choose between a selection of image formats.)
I shall further point out that some programs (e.g. MS OneNote) will copy content both as an image and as text. In this scenario, we need to make sure the user can still paste the plain text content without having to jump through hoops.
This never worked for plain-text messages, actually. HTML messages will put the image as part of the message body rather than as a "true" attachment. See bug 335783 and bug 480736 for pasting from the clipboard as attachment. I don't know if it still works, but you can try the extension mentioned in bug 335783 comment 31. Selecting the preferred image format for pasted images (default PNG vs. lower-quality but smaller JPEG) can be done in the Config Editor with the clipboard.paste_image_type preference.

Hmm, I use Greenshot: 1) Press "Print Screen" 2) Drag rectangle, when done: Save file (to desktop or folder) 3) Drag file to attachment area of message. I can't see any "hoops". Bug 480736 is a low priority enhancement request. We're volunteer driven. If someone wants to implement this, we'll review and accept a patch.

So what? This bug (or RFE, rather) is about being able to paste an image directly from the clipboard. Furthermore, bug 480736 is about being able to paste a _file_, not an _image_, from the clipboard into an email. As such, bug 335783 is a much better match.
Yeah, I was more thinking of bug 335783 as a better match, though it may be considered just a special case of bug 480736 for images on the clipboard rather than text or a file.
