From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.0.0+) Gecko/20020517
BuildID: 2002051708
When Mail & News is started as normal, memory usage climbs extremely quickly,
eventually swapping out all other loaded applications (including X itself) to
the point where the system is unuseable. Solution is to quickly `killall
mozilla-bin` before the system is overrun.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Load web-browser
2. Close web-browser
3. Load Mail & News
Actual Results: Memory was completely consumed, swap began to rise, system
became sluggish - logins were delayed due to lack of system resources.
Expected Results: Loaded Mail & News

I have Windows XP and have been using Mozilla 1.2.1 for mail without trouble for
awhile now. I'm connecting to a secure IMAP server. Yesterday I created a few
IMAP folders on the server. Today I can open the Mail window ok, but when I
click on any of the server items (Inbox, Sent, Trash, or folders I've created)
it ramps up to infinite memory.

I've had the same memory problem under Win2000. Mozilla did not respond to any
user input or clicks.

I have experienced the same problem with Windows 2000 and Mozilla 1.2.1. I
started Mail & News from the systray menu, and after a strange delay I could see
in the Task Manager that Mozilla was reaching 256 MB. I had to kill it from the
Task Manager. It's been the first time I've seen this problem though I've been
working with Mozilla 1.2.1 since it was available.

PC/All. Confirming on basis of multiple reports. This appears to affect MailNews
on startup.
Moz uses plenty of memory, but I haven't seen an infitite increase.
There must be some contributing factors:
- how big is your mail folder?
- are you using IMAP?
etc
I'm using POP3, and my mail folder is 310 MB.

WFM and apparently for others.
closing WFM.
Please reopen if you encounter the problem in a modern version of moz.

Note, if one gets error message saying "virtual memory low" is not necessarily the fault of mozilla - it could be that memory was already very low before starting moz.
