Ok learned something. There is a bug in Bugzilla it would appear Message which embed Unicode emoji in the subject line are rendered at least on some Ubuntu installations grossly over sized The image at https://prod-cdn.sumo.mozilla.net/uploads/images/2018-05-02-23-22-21-276455.png shows an example. Sending a message using windows 10 using [unicode characters removed because Bugzilla could not parse them apparently.] as the subject does not display this enlarged rendering, however it does render in the send dialog's windows header as a series of square boxes.
Summary: Some Ubuntu users have reported inappropriately suzed emoji in the mesage list views. → Some Ubuntu users have reported inappropriately sized/ scaled emoji in the message list views.
@Chris, have you any experience with 18.04? Another instance https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1216191 Perhaps the workaround in that topic works

Further recent reports all effecting Linux Ubuntu I located another reported case where they had found a workaround to help deal with issue, so that info may help you to work out what is going wrong. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1178430 I provided link and info to other support queries: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1215465 The OP said the info helped, even if not perfect solution. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1216037 Good examples of images also at support forum links. posted 'view Source' subject info: Subject: =?utf-8?Q?Amazing_Slow_Cooker_Chicken_=F0=9F=8D=97_+_Potato_=F0=9F=A5=94?= =?utf-8?Q?_+_Chicken_Noodle_Soup_=F0=9F=8D=9C_Recipes_on_Yummly?=
Looks like removing or disabling the noto color emoji font works to remove the problem. Given changing the font appears to resolve the issue perhaps this is a Ubuntu problem, but why only Thunderbird. @jorg can you offer any insight?

Sorry, I can't I'm not a Linux person. If you read trough bug 1390015 and its many duplicates, there is a workaround, bug 1390015 comment #13 (Uninstall Noto, install something else). But then you knew this already. Let's see whether a Mozilla GTK person can help.

Bug 1267909 fixes this in FF54 and above. Is the bug possibly already fixed in the current TB beta version?

If the fix from bug 1267909 won't help, I'll try to install the right version of Ubuntu (is is the 16.04 LTS, right?).

I don't know about 16.04 LTS, but I'm seeing it in 18.04 LTS, with current updates
