User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/68.0.3440.106 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce: When I select YES (or OK?) to compress my inbox, a second warning says that another operation is running, and presents an OK button for me to press, which I do. Actual results: Apparently, after pressing OK, no compress operation takes place. Soon after, I get another suggestion that I should compress the inbox. In other words, the inbox never gets compressed. Expected results: When asked if I want to compress files in an inbox and I say YES, I'd expect the compress operation to take place. It seems that Thunderbird always thinks that some operation is being performed on the inbox, so it can never be compressed.
You are using the English version of Thunderbird? I'm quite certain the term shown is "compact". What you are probably seeing is "The folder 'Inbox' cannot be compacted because another operation is in progress", such as the attached screen shot. Is this an imap account, or pop? Do you have filters defined for this account?

Summary: When I get an offer to compress files in my inbox, I get a message saying can't compress inbox because "another operation" is in process. → alert "The folder 'Inbox' cannot be compacted because another operation is in progress" after compact prompt

My account is an imap account and has no filters defined. - Malcolm
