Does this fail with beta from https://www.thunderbird.net/channel/ ?
(some addons may not work, but htis is just a test)

now on Thunderbird 60.8.0, MacOS 10.13.6, this error stil occurs

Did you get a crash + Crash ID?

Hrm. I don't have a "Location" option in my Apple menu; but neither have I used the network location feature in... probably over a decade? I can try to set it up and test if you point me to the proper place to configure this. (Sorry for the delay in responding; I had meant to figure it out myself, but it's becoming increasingly clear that I don't have time for that, so I'm asking for step-by-step instructions)
