I recent changed a gmail account to "mark as deleted model". When I deleted a message in a thread with multiple messages, it advances to the next thread instead of the next message in the currently selected thread.
Perhaps it is related to me also having mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads = false? (not the default)
- in account settings > server settings pick "just mark it as deleted"
- have a thread in message list/thread pane with multiple messages
- have thread collapsed
- mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads = false
- delete top message
Result: top message deleted and selection advances to next thread
Expected results: top message deleted and selection advances to next message in current thread
I'm using 69 beta, but I would think it's been this way a long time

I'm hoping this is an easy fix because I see other behaviors in this area have been fixed by Magnus
Bug 486954 - make standalone message respect mail.delete_matches_sort_order and advance also for the imap mark-as-deleted model
Bug 451877 - IMAP mark-as-deleted model: while offline - delete doesn't advance to next message
I wonder whether mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads = false is messing up the behavior here.
I filed a new bug because a similar report is a horrible mess Bug 65823 - IMAP: After deleting a message, selection should move to next NON-deleted message
There is also Bug 452394 which I can confirm still exists - imap mark-as-deleted model: should close msg and advance after deleting (in standalone msg window) (like pop)

Not sure you have a reasonable expectation. You'd expect the collapsed thread to expand just because you deleted the top message?

Yes, absolutely I expect the application to facilitate my actions, because my expectation is delete behavior is consistent for the various delete options. If that means expanding the thread then so be it. If I delete the top message message of a thread, on what planet would I expect it to advance to the next thread instead of the next message in the current thread?
Consistency is key:
- remove it immediately - advances to next message
- move it to this folder - advances to next message
Wasn't consistency part of the reason for bug 451877?

bug 367689 has similar symptoms, but I'm certain my issue is not compact related

(In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk) from comment #4)
Perhaps Thomas has some memories in related areas
Unfortunately nothing springs to mind on this one.
But I'd sympathize with Wayne's expectation of comment 0 that after deleting the top message of a collapsed thread, it should open that thread and advance focus to the next message in the thread.
