When new IMAP mail is received and previewed, it seems to be marked as read, but
after checking for new mail again or going to a different folder and then
returning, the messages are marked unread again. After previewing messages
twice, they seem to stay marked read.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Wait for new mail.
2. Click on a new, unread message once to preview it in the preview frame.
3. After the message is marked read, choose a different folder.
4. Return to the original folder. The message will be marked unread again.
5. Preview the message once more. This time it will stay marked read.

Actual Results:  Messages must be previewed twice before they are permanently
marked read.

Expected Results:  Messages should be marked unread after the first time they
are previewed.

I have only tested this using IMAP mail accounts with the messages stored on the
server. I'm not sure if it also happens with POP mail or locally-stored IMAP
mail. In any case, this bug has been present as long as I've been using Mozilla
Mail, which is almost forever.

I cannot reproduce it on our Netscape Messaging Server.
Can I know what kind of the IMAP Server are you connecting with?
Also, what do you mean "locally-stored IMAP mail"? Do you mean "Local Folder"?

My IMAP server is Rockliffe MailSite v4.5.6 running on Windows 2000 Advanced
Server. I'm fairly certain this is a Mozilla bug, since I've tried other IMAP
clients with this server and Mozilla is the only one that shows this behavior.
And yes, by "locally-stored mail" I mean mail in Local Folders.

I see this problem with mailandnews.com. You can get a free account and try it
out. This problem does not happen with MS Exchange Server or myrealbox.com.
Definitely an interop issue. 

Ryan, can you get a log file for IMAP? That might help. See
<http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#imap>. I'll try
to get one later too.

This is an IMAP log of me checking my mail, previewing a new message, leaving
the Inbox folder, returning to the Inbox folder (to find the message once again
marked unread), and previewing it again. After the second preview, the message
stayed "read".

This is a log file I created with mailandnews.com server. I did the following

- Started Mail
- Clicked on the 1 new message so it opens in the 3 pane window. Message 
  got marked read
- Clicked on a second message (not new)
- Clicked on Get Messsages
- The first message which I had read got shown in Bold again. I clicked on 
  it again and it got marked read and stayed read.
