Steps to reproduce:
I work with seniors, and some have some understanding of lossy compression and was fearful of loosing resolution in his jpeg images.
also being a lawyer and understanding implications
and subtleties of the language, he clicked the x every time and cursed your existence.
Expected results:
wording should be and action should correspond
compress images without asking? checkbox checked means do it without asking. (unchecking will disable automatic compression)
perhaps a radio button
always ask before compressing
compress without asking
do not compress unless manually triggered
also a note about lossless compression would be reassuring.
(data is compressed in a lossless format to speed up load times from disk and to save disk space) i cant read the rest of the options in this form i am using android 9 browser... i dont know what severity i chose.

Thanks for filing this bug report. Compact has nothing to do with compression. And yes, this dialog has always been confusing.
Sounds like it would be helped by Bug 716412 - compact dialog prompt: unchecking "Always ask me before compacting folders automatically" fails to change or keep mail.purge.ask preference to false
