User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:72.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/72.0

Steps to reproduce:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-repeatedly-opens-empty-tabs-or-windows

I have Firefox set as the default PDF viewer on my computer. This bug causes multiple tabs to open because Firefox will not open the PDF file.

I tried to view this file in the Firefox PDF viewer:

http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/Laci/ISK_Vol_2_Rubicon_1_3_2_ENG_TEASER.pdf

However... Firefox will not view that file and instead tries to get me to save it locally, which I did. Then I pressed ALT to get to the FIle menu and then selected that file. When I attempted to open it, I got a dialog where I told Firefox to default to opening PDF files. After I did this, multiple tabs started opening in a loop.

Actual results:

multiple tabs started opening in a loop and Firefox will not open or display that PDF file.

Expected results:

Firefox should have opened and displayed the PDF file.

This file should open with Firefox. However, if the settings on the dialog box are as shown, it causes an endless loop of new tabs to open.

Bugbug thinks this bug should belong to this component, but please revert this change in case of error.

Component: Untriaged → File Handling

I just tested the bug again with the settings in the picture I uploaded... It still is a bug.

However... In the first link..

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-repeatedly-opens-empty-tabs-or-windows

...I had to do what it said to stop the bug from happening automatically when I clicked on the PDF link a second time. When I changed the setting from "Use Firefox (default)" to "Preview in Firefox" the file was displayed normally as it should have done the first time.

I just tested that dialog again... This time I noticed that there is no "Preview in Firefox" option in that dialog box.

Yes, this is not very good UI on our part. bug 1581383 covers the confusion in the preferences, bug 768788 covers adding a "preview" option in the "open with" dialog.

Oh, and bug 215554 covers the endless loop.
