After a while, drop down menus just turn to black rectangles and the message area mirrors the message LIST that's above it, instead of displaying the message itself (and that in a jumbled way). Incidentally, in my desperation I installed 73.0b1 meanwhile, but it does the same thing as 68.4.1

A huge range of crash signatures suggests memory corruption, perhaps from faulty memory or other hardware. Because you are crashing so frequently I would first try the following
- Start Windows' safe mode with networking enabled
- win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode
Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird
Does problem go away? If YES then start Thunderbird normally with WIndows still in safe mode. If problem returns, then problem is something related to "normal" TB startup. If problem didn't return then the problem is something that initiates during Windows startup, like antivirus.
- If problem did not go away in safe mode, then if you are able to access memory chips - if you have spare memory swap it with what's on the machine, or if the machine has multiple chips swap the two chips. If you cannot or the problem persists, then test memory https://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-memory-diagnostics-tool-in-windows-7
Also, I see you are on a Lenovo Windows 10 with 8gb ram. How old is this hardware?
Thank you. Let me ask you this, though:
- the problem never occurred before until updating to 68.4.1
- problem does not occur on any other software, which all continues to run perfectly
Would a memory problem specifically begin to affect Thunderbird at the exact moment it was updated? Seems unlikely?

(In reply to max from comment #6)
It seems to run fine in safe mode.
which safe mode? (there are two)
Windows in regular mode, I simply started Thunderbird in safe mode, and it runs and runs... so far
It did finally crash out on me, but ran a LOT longer than in regular mode.

And you also ran Thunderbird in safe mode when Windows was in safe mode? This Windows 10 machine is running as 64bit? How old is the hardware?
If you are finding safe mode does not help, and you have imap accounts, I suggest creating a new profile and test a couple of your accounts in the new profile https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-multiple-profiles

Yessir. Windows 10 64bit and Thunderbird BOTH in safe mode still had the problem. Like stated above, the BIOS is dated 9/2015, I don't remember exactly when I got this laptop, but I believe that BIOS date would be the best indicator of the system's age.

OK, I created a new profile for my Gmail IMAP account, and it displays the same characteristics - jumbled or blank windows, blackened pull-downs. I could not get it to crash, but that's probably because I couldn't really do anything much as far as actual functional steps, i.e. when I hit REPLY, the window that came up was blank, etc.

||
Same thing when I tried to start a new message, I never even got to a point where I could try and test adding an attachment, changing color or size of the font, etc. because the message window was corrupt and nut functional to begin with.

I sampled several and they are the same crash signatures.
I think your next step is to try beta https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/#channel If you have Thunderbird extensions they likely won't work, except calendar, which I don't seen enabled in your crash reports.
But I still suspect a hardware issue.
FWIW, other OOM crashes of the past year https://mzl.la/2uMEiZh

I actually switched to Beta days ago in desperation, because I thought that might help the problem. I have been running 73.0b1 (32-bit) all this time.

I will download the official Beta you linked to now, though.
The latest phenomenon is that I sometimes get emails twice for no reason (such as all your latest notifications coming through Bugzilla)

Oh, OK... it turns out that suggested BETA version is the same one I have already been running.

By the way, instead of upgrading, I wanted to downgrade back to an earlier version (which was working perfectly), but was then told that I can't, because something had been changed in the profile structure with the new version, and the profiles are not retro-able.

Couple more notes: Thunderbird Portable seemed to work just fine (that release still 60.9.1 Portable). Finally uninstalled the new crap, moved my profile, and restored an old email profile from before the 68.4.1 update.
Now reinstalled 60.9.1 (not portable), and it went back to working like a charm. Yeah, I did lose a bunch of my email, but I can't keep wrestling with my email client like this every day, it's seriously impacting my productivity.

You've been very patient and sorry I've been distracted/not paying enough attention, including forgetting that version 60 was running fine for you. But you shouldn't have needed to restore an old profile to run version 60 - it should run OK using your latest profile unless you have reason to believe your data as been corrupted.
Also based on your testing a code regression between version 60 and 68 should be causing this. If you are willing it would be very helpful to determine where in time that regression occurs - with your record of crashing in 5 minutes to 20 hours (many less than 60 and 30 minutes) we can probably determine that in a few iterations of installs that won't affect you running version 60 - two version of thunderbird using two profiles can run side by side.

also, might be a bug in our graphics code. Do you run Firefox?

The first time I tried to regress just leaving my profile as was, I was literally told by a pop-up window that I can't do that, because something had changed in the way profiles were now organized (sorry, I don't remember the original wording). Since I already lost a bunch of email trying to migrate to another client, then uninstalling that client and subsequently seeing my Thunderbird (!) data folder deleted in the process, I didn't really have much to lose.
I do have Firefox of course, but don't often use it. 71.0 is my current install.
Would be glad to be of help with trying to get to the bottom of this (since it's PERSONAL now!!) as long as it doesn't mess with my regular email based productivity. Does this mean we would need to go through every in-between version to figure out when exactly the pattern occurs?
