User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:72.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/72.0
Steps to reproduce:
It should be possible in the Options > Chat > General to toggle something that will not print "<USER> entered the room" and "<USER> has left the room" in XMPP conferences.

It is pretty standard for instant messaging applications to show this information; without it it could be confusing who has seen what messages. I agree this can get annoying in busy rooms, which is why some of the message themes (e.g. Bubbles) automatically collapses these messages. I don't remember which other message themes automatically collapse messages like this though -- which are you using?

People use XMPP for a heck of a lot more than just small group IM. The smallest XMPP conference I am in has ~80 participants, and the largest over 1000. I'd love to replace Pidgin but without join/part hiding it's pretty unusable.

Thanks for your response. We're aware that people use XMPP for large group chats (I'm in several IRC channels of similar size). Did you see my query above about the different message themes?

I have used both Thunderbird and Simple themes. Neither collapse the join/part messages. FWIW Bubbles does not either.

Bubbles does collapse the join/part messages, I believe there has to be four in a row for them to get collapsed. See the image I attached for what this looks like.
Looking briefly it seems that the Thunderbird theme does this as well, but the Simple theme will not.
Florian, do you have any thoughts on removing these messages altogether? I think this has come up before, but can't remember the context. I'm wondering if we used to have an add-on that allowed this for IRC or something...

I'll leave the Thunderbird theme running for a bit longer then, and check it out.
I understand that in a lot of situations those messages are important, but for some uses, they are just spam. I'd love to be able to ignore them per chat, but a global switch that defaulted to showing them would be all I'd really need.

My preference was to merge them, so they become a single line saying "abc, xyz and def joined, 45 participants left." This was difficult to achieve while remaining compatible with the Adium message theme format, but I think at this point we have diverged enough that we no longer care about maintaining compatibility.
If someone really wants to hide these messages, it's probably be possible to do with a userContent.css file, but I haven't tried.
