I installed Mozilla using the installer (build 2002081808, windows); and chatzilla has no icon. my guess is that packages-win does not contain "chatzilla-window.ico". maybe it misses other icons as well, and maybe this happens on linux as well (can't check atm). cc'ing owners of the "check in [platform] taskbar icons" bugs.
well, to clarify: chatzilla does have an icon, it's just the default one =)

This fixes it, but I'd really like to know if there's a particular reason that the chatzilla install script uses addFile instead of just addDirectory for the entire program directory. That would be cleaner and solve this problem too.

happens on linux too (2002083005)
OS: Windows 98 → All
Mozilla 1.2b on linux: the chatzilla icon shows only in "window" menu but not in status bar.

This is just a simple patch, and helps keep Mozilla looking professional.

Can someone answer bryner's question?

I don't know why chatzilla uses addFile instead of addDirectory. I think Dan Veditz wrote that script, 3 years ago or so. Perhaps addDirectory didn't exist then.
