macOS Firefox forgets the Google search page sometimes if I search from the address bar

Steps to reproduce:

I searched for "difference between 20GHz and 40GHz wifi" in the address bar, and clicked the first result on the Google search results page. I am on macOS 10.14.6.

Actual results:

After I had finished reading the page on Superuser.com, I tried to navigate back to the Google page but the back button is disabled. I encounter this problem with Google search results at least 2-3 times a day. Firefox essentially forgets the page I came from.

Expected results:

Clicking on the back button should have taken me back to the Google search results.

Bugbug thinks this bug should belong to this component, but please revert this change in case of error.

I have identified exactly when this happens for me in at least one instance.

  1. Create a new tab.
  2. Search for a word or term using the address bar.
  3. Select an Instagram result from the search page.
  4. Once the Instagram page loads, the history for that tab vanishes and I cannot go back to the search page.

It happens with other web pages, so as I notice it I will add it to this bug issue.

AtomicHaggis, this might be because of browser.navigation.requireUserInteraction which got disabled for Nightly in bug 1652452.
Are you still able to reproduce this behavior?

Sounds like a dup of bug 1621864 with the same underlying issue as already mentioned in comment 5.

Do you still see this problem? Can you please copy and share your Firefox's about:support text?

Possibly related to back button intervention (meta bug 1645211).

I haven't yet seen it occur in Firefox 81. I will update this issue if I do.
