TB had done an automatic update today, I restarted TB and it sat there with memory increasing to eventually 20GB (my box only has 8GB so it was thrashing by this point) with 1133 threads and using 100% CPU (i.e. one full CPU). Force-Quit of TB and another start didn't work - leaving it for a while didn't work either.
I had just added a new account with no configured server, so I thought that might have been the issue, so restored prefs.js from backup - didn't fix it.
Restoring App from backup to 79.0b2 worked.
TB has been working really well - since a complete reinstall to a month or two ago to fix a different bug, so I have no reason to suspect corruption.
I'm back working ok again, but reporting this in case anyone else sees a problem. For some reasons it now thinks 79.0b2 is "up to date" so I'm going to skip upgrading to 79.0b3 unless someone wants me to try and help find the problem.

The update mechanism is not broken - updates to 79.0b3 are disabled for Mac, is why you didn't get the update.
What you are seeing is bug 1655685 which will be fixed in beta 80.
