Steps to reproduce (TB 78.1.1) :
- Start TB
- Select an email folder (Inbox for instance)
- Close TB
- Start TB again
Expected: selected folder is Inbox.
Actual: selected folder is the root account folder.
I have already tried to delete session.json file in the profile but it won't help.

It was changed to always use a known folder on start, in bug 1620310. If you don't have it set to show the start page you get the old behavior.

The option When Thunderbird launches, show the Start Page in the message area is unchecked, but it still doesn't work. Confirmed by more users here.

I can confirm this, see the topic http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=3063340
I would point out that the session.js file of TB 78 and TB 68 are identical

Yes, like I said, if you have "Show start page" checked it works like before.

No. If you have it checked, the message preview pane shows the start page. Beforet it was empty until you select a message.

The only way to get close to the old behavior is to copy the Location of a folder into the Start page Location. So it always opens the folder without the Start Page.

Should be resolved now in Thunderbird 78.2.2 with bug 1629522.
