Doug, does that filter have a large number of rules?

Summary: Thunderbird 78.2.2 is unuseable - constanting hanging with rotating rainbox circle → double-click on filter hangs Thunderbird
Whiteboard: [filtermgmt]

Yes, it does have a lot of rules. And I've experienced long open times for that filter in previous versions of TB. But the delay with the newest version of TB was way longer than I've ever experienced before. Maybe it was something about opening a filter list in an older format and it was busy converting it? I suggest this because today I can open that filter list and it does take a long time, but nothing like that first use of the new TB, as I ended up forcing a crash with "kill -SIGABRT [pid]" and in response to the prompts from TB, having it sent to you folks.

I just had another whirling round rainbow experience. My Macbook was sleeping. I opened it up, brought TB to the front and the rotating rainbow started up and kept going for a couple minutes. TB was using 98% of the CPU. Before I could induce a crash, it pulled out of it and started responding.
