User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:81.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/81.0
Steps to reproduce:
With mouse, I hovered the pointer on a blue folder name to see the tooltip listing the unread messages.
Actual results:
The folder name turns black, and the tooltip doesn't appear. This happens fairly frequently, but I don't have a reliable way to reproduce it yet.
Expected results:
The folder name should stay blue until I've clicked on it to see the messages in it. The tooltip should appear.
I didn't notice this problem until upgrading from version 68 to version 78.2.2. Before that, I would occasionally notice that a folder had turned from blue to black before I had clicked on it, but I didn't actually notice the change happen.

Looks like the same bug, at least under the theory in 804214 comment 3 that the problem happens due to the mouseover, rather than due to switching folders.
By the way, I'm still seeing the bug in 78.6.0 (64-bit), still unreliably, which is what wajust as in 804214.

Obviously having some computer trouble; sorry about that. I'll preview my comments from now on.

I was never able to determine what caused bug 804214. But it stopped happening for me.

I thought it had stopped happening for me, too, in the latest release. But then I started noticing it again. I may be more likely to see the bug than the average user, since I have approximately 200 folders that I filter incoming messages into.

Barry,
What Linux version, desktop and OS theme are you using?
I can not reproduce using Thunderbird 78.6.1, Fedora 33 Workstation Gnome with the default Adwaita theme.
Only had 2 folders to test with at this time, saw the tool tip and the folder stayed blue using Thunderbird's default, light and dark themes.

I reproduced the bug just now in 78.6.1 (64-bit) Solus Linux 4.1 Mate, but had to try more than 2 folders to get it to happen.

Make that Thunderbird 78.6.1 (64-bit) in Solus Linux 4.1 Mate.

@Reporter,
Does this still reproduce when using version 91? And if you resolved the problem, what was the solution?

I'm not seeing the problem in 91.3.0 (64-bit). In fact, I haven't seen it in a while, so I was waiting to be told it was fixed. However, the fix seems to have come at the cost of a loss of functionality. The tooltip doesn't always appear, and if it does, it usually is the name of the folder, rather than the new messages in it. The functionality lost was definitely useful and worth restoring if possible, but nowhere near as critical as fixing this bug.
I'm not sure what you mean by, "And if you resolved the problem, what was the solution?" But I hope I addressed your questions.

Thanks for the update
I'm suddenly seeing this again tonight, in 91.7.0, every time I hover the pointer on a blue folder name. Unless someone specifically fixed this, I suggest reopening it. I'll update this when I have more information.

To follow up on my last comment:
-
I was seeing this last night in 91.7.0 (64-bit) in Fedora.
-
I'm not seeing this since restarting my computer and Thunderbird today (still in 91.7.0). Hence, something seems to have triggered last night's behavior, though I haven't been able to find what that was.
