RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1678856

People

(Reporter: bugzilla, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:83.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/83.0

Steps to reproduce:

Experienced compacting dialog.

Actual results:

Compacting dialog produced text including:

"The messages you have deleted can be purged from disk"

Expected results:

I have never deleted any messages, nor would I want to. This text is inaccurate, misleading, and troubling.

This text should be returned to text that is not inaccurate, as it was previously, or be otherwise remedied.

Summary: compact text misleading → "Compact" dialog text misleading, mentioning deleted messages

If you never deleted any messages, that dialog would not come up. So I don't know what this bug is about.

Reporter,

You have never marked any messages as “Junk” and had your accounts Junk settings configured to “Automatically delete junk mail older than” a specified number of days?

Or Options > Privacy & Security > Junk setting configured to delete them when you mark them as junk?

Flags: needinfo?(bugzilla)

No, I do not use the Junk feature. I don't have a Junk folder.

Depending on the server, also moving messages to other folders would leave "deleted" messages behind.

The text is simply incorrect.

It was changed here:
https://hg.mozilla.org/comm-central/rev/a08e9c097cd2#l1.12

Compacting is not deleting, and even if you wanted to think of it that way, I consider it doubtful most end users would understand this dialog to mean as much.

I don't know if it's about the same bug, but for me it asks if compacting should be done several times a day when it used to ask this maybe once a week. And it says the operation will save XX MB of disk space. This XX keeps increasing as if no compacting is done.
I started seeing this compacting question frequently in January 2021. This had never been like this before.

The wording issue is being dealt with in bug 1678856. Please strictly observe bug 1678856 comment 48 and 50

Plus filters that move messages. Plus deleting messages on some other device, like a phone.

It's also possible that the reporter is inappropriately getting frequent compact requests, like ph in comment 6. That is bug 1260698.
