Steps to reproduce:
I add tags to emails that I retrieve via IMAP by pressing "1" on an email in the email list view. The message then gets marked in red as "important". Then when I'm done with this email, I want to untag it pressing "1" again.
Actual results:
At first, the message tag gets removed as expected, but roughly 1 - 2 seconds later, the tag reappears. Impossible to remove it completely. This is happening since TB 68, now I'm using TB 78.5.1.
Expected results:
The tag gets removed permanently.

Hey u (reporter), this worksforme on Win10, TB 78.5.1 (32-Bit), with gmail IMAP.
I think I've sometimes seen this, but it seems to work like 99% of the time.
- Pls try if bug occurs after Help > restart with addons disabled.
- Does it happen every time when you tag any message?
- How stable is your network connection? Maybe the tag didn't make it to the server (network down for a sec), then maybe the server returns the tag (which would be a bug, but a bit hard to test).

Hi Thomas D,
- I have no addons enabled.
- It happens to any tagged messages, yes.
- My network connection is that of urban Europe, i.e. very stable.
I'm running TB 78.5.1 on Debian Buster.
I just tested if it's due to some server config, but it happens with four different email accounts on two different, completely unrelated, IMAP servers.

Are you running a TB distro or the original TB from thunderbird.net?

(In reply to Thomas D. (:thomas8) from comment #3)
Are you running a TB distro or the original TB from thunderbird.net?
I would add to that question, what are the names of the IMAP servers and the IMAP implementation used on each?

I'm using Debian's (distro) Thunderbird. And my IMAP servers are standard, running on a self hosted Debian server. If nobody else has this kind of issue, then this might be related. And then feel free to close that bug - people who have similar issues can reopen it.

I'm not aware of any known bugs in this area, but perhaps Gene does?

Setting the tags on messages are very dependent on the server doing the right thing. I tried it on an openwave, courier and self-hosted dovecot (on fedora) and they all worked as expected (hit 1 turns it red, then hitting 1 again removes the red and it stays off).
Not sure what a "standard debian server" is, maybe dovecot. Anyhow, to know what is happening probably an IMAP:5 log would be helpful. https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging
