Steps to reproduce:

I can't add email addresses to my local folders in thunderbird? I am running windows 10 & Thunderbird 78.5.1 (64-bit)
I tried to add an email address to one of my local folders.
I have a few rules set up so EG when emails from friends comes into my inbox it automatically goes into a local folder named friends.

Actual results:

It states Not Responding & A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Expected results:

The new email should be added to the relevant local folder.
Existing rules still work IE if I receive an email from an address that is already set up it goes into the relevant local folder.

Are you trying to add the email address to an existing filter?
And if so, how many rules (email addresses) are likely already in that filter?

Assuming there are many, there are known performance issues with that, but the real issue is this:
Bug 1465076 - Implement filter operators "contains any of" and "contains all of" to support multiple search terms in a single rule (in addition to "contains string")

Maybe we should start duplicating bugs against that, because if we were to allow multiple email addresses in a single condition, most of these problems would go away automatically.

Yes I am trying to add email addresses to an existing folder. I have nearly 200 email addresses. I am using the filter match any of the following. Is there a limit to the number of email addresses per folder? If so what is the limit?

There is no limit. But your description points to bug 1588155, which is not yet solved

What I have done is to create another local folder. so I have Finance 1 & Finance 2. This seems to work it means I have two local folders dealing with the same subject. Not very elegant but it seems to work.
