Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Fedora; Linux x86_64; rv:84.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/84.0
Steps to reproduce:
in my inbox, I do have enabled the "show discussions" option, so all discussions are shown in a tree view. When I compact a discussion tree (so the entire tree is shown as a single entry), as soon a new message arrives, Thunderbird expands the discussion entirely, showing all the messages
Expected results:
Thunderbird should not expand compacted discussion trees without user interaction
Version thunderbird 78.6.0

Where do I find this show discussions preference to enable it, or do you mean View > Sort By and have Threaded enabled?

I noticed this happens even after the user used the quick filter search
