In an e-mail with a text, image and PDF attachment, in the preview, double-click those attachments.

The text attachment doesn't open at all, the image replaces the message preview and the PDF attachment opens in a new tab. The latter may be expected.

When the message is opened into its own window, the image opens in the external image viewer as expected, the PDF doesn't open

Opening into a new tab behaves like the preview.
