User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.14; rv:85.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/85.0
Steps to reproduce:
create an account with germ umlaut (--@grünerkreis...de) (german version of tb 78.7.0)
Actual results:
account name was not accepted; name reqires conversion to ace -
xn--grnerkreis-32b.de
Expected results:
the converted address in the mail account would be ok, but if a mail is sent the sender-address shoukd be correctly displayed (--@grünerkreis) and not as ace (from:--@xn--grnerkreis-32b.de).
thunderbird is the only program which cannot handle german umlaut in the mail address.

Hallo rhodostelle, can you file the full text of the error message and/or a screenshot (remove private data as required - was privat ist, bitte schwärzen)?
It's a bit hard to reproduce without having access to an IDN domain with u-umlaut...
Wayne, do we have any IDN test domains at our disposal?

I don't know. But perhaps Alessandro or Gene.

I registered domain foà.it (agrave, a.k.a. backtick, xn--fo-kia.it) which is not much used. Shall I set up a couple of accounts to experiment with?

i noticed that the (ace-converted) account name is spelled correctly when sent to accounts on some providers e.g. web.de and strato.de (see attached file), may be on others as well. possibly the converted spelling is solely a problem with tb. in this case i could live with it - although it does look a bit strange.
thanks a lot for your efforts and assistance.

I think that would be helpful Alessandro, just to get a first-hand impression where we currently stand with IDNs.
There's a number of bugs around IDNs, let's hope one day this will get some love from developers.
For now, let's mark this as 5th duplicate of bug 811272.

Alessandro answered this in comment 4. I personally don't have one. (Clearing NI.)
