Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/90.0.4430.93 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

Reply or forward an email.

Actual results:

Thunderbird will add a "On [date], [name] wrote:". Below when composing HTML email, Thunderbird adds the message you are replying to or forwarding and a blue bar on the left side, to indicate that the text is a quote. When composing a plain text email, Thunderbird adds ">" characters before each line.

Expected results:

The user should be given an option inside the preferences to alternatively use the Microsoft Outlook style reply design, which is the de-facto standard in business communication.

This means no "On [date], [name] wrote:", no blue bar or ">" characters on the left side. When composing HTML messages, Outlook adds a horizontal line and states some information like sender, subject and date below. When composing plain text messages, I believe Outlook inserts some "====" characters as a separator instead of the horizontal line.

You can copy the HTML styling from a message sent by Outlook.

There is an addon aiming to provide a similar functionality, however it does not seem to be actively maintained. Maybe we can integrate the functionality directly into Thunderbird?

Bug 67089 for the headers. No intention of not quoting the original.
