[Notes]:

  • The issue is also intermittently reproducible when switching between the tabs.

[Affected versions]:

  • Firefox Nightly 90.0a1 (Build ID: 20210511093339);

[Affected Platforms]:

  • Windows 10 x64;

[Prerequisites]:

  • Have the latest Firefox Nightly installed.
  • Have the Amazon search engine set as default.
  • Have the "Show search suggestions ahead of browsing history in address bar results" option is unchecked.
  • Have the following prefs set:
  • browser.urlbar.quicksuggest.enabled to true.
  • browser.urlbar.quicksuggest.seenRestarts to '89'.
  • browser.urlbar.quicksuggest.showedOnboardingDialog to true.
  • browser.urlbar.experimental.firefoxSuggestLabels.enabled to true.

[Steps to reproduce]:

  1. Open the Firefox browser with the profile from prerequisites.
  2. Navigate to "about:preferences#search" page and set "Amazon.com" as default search engine.
  3. Open a new tab and start typing "nike" keyword.
  4. Press the “Backspace” key to delete the keyword.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until reproducing the issue.
  6. Observe the Address bar.

[Expected result]:

  • The "Amazon.com suggestions" section is correctly displayed.

[Actual result]:

  • The "Amazon.com suggestions" section is not displayed.

[Additional Notes]:

  • I didn’t manage to reproduce the issue on macOS and Linux, but will update the report if I encounter it on other OSes.
  • This issue is NOT reproducible using other search engines (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Wikipedia)
  • Attached a screen recording of the issue.

This is similar to https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1710650#c1 -- the Amazon suggestions apparently take a moment to arrive, and it's possible that they sometimes take so long that Firefox doesn't add them to the list of results. Regardless, I don't think this is related to bug 1709992. Could you please test with a Nightly before that bug landed to confirm?

Flags: needinfo?(cfat)

I also tested this scenario using Firefox Release 88.0.1 (where the Firefox Suggest is not yet implemented) and was able to reproduce the issue. I am updating the report accordingly.

Thanks. I'm not sure there's much we can do here. We could start by investigating whether I'm right that that the reason the Amazon results don't appear is that they take too long to arrive and urlbar gives up waiting. Another possibility is that the results are slow to arrive but not too slow, and we have some async-related bug somewhere.

I found bug 1647721 while searching through past bugs, so I'll mark this a dupe of that. See also bug 1663949 and bug 1560690.
