Steps to reproduce:

Nothing in particular. I watched television, and TB's inbox was opened.

Settings in user.js:

Actual results:

When I came back to my machine, Thunderbird had written 86GB to my disk, according to Task Manager - see attached image. Cpu time is only 16 minutes; for comparison: Firefox wrote 30GB to disk, but with almost 4 hours of cpu time.

Total profile size is about 16GB, half of which very old unused local folders.

This is not the first time; same problem some months ago, not quite this amount but still, enough to destroy my consumer grade SSD.

Expected results:

Thunderbird should respect the limitations and life expectancy of my prescious hardware.
Thunderbird should use RAM if it needs temporary storage, and leave my disk alone. No software should be allowed to abuse a user's harddisk like this.

OS: Unspecified → Windows 7
Hardware: Unspecified → x86_64

Still, Firefox isn't far behind - considering it might be doing less work than thunderbird.
What AV software do you run?

Wayne, I agree that Firefox' 30GB score is also exaggerated, but it was active for several days, with almost 15x Cpu time used, and it was doing something useful.

TB instead did nothing useful, and I really have no clue how any programmer could permit this software to write 86GB to my innocent disk. Btw TB did it again right now, 20GB in perhaps half an hour - I noticed it when it was too late already. No visible sign of activity in the status bar or elsewhere.

Re AV, why would this matter? It's TB's process that writes so much to disk...

Because I've seen cases where AV CPU and disk activity gets charged to the application process. So unfortunately I ask again, "What AV software do you run?"

How often do you have Thundebird compacting folders? The default is to do it when it will save 200MB of disk space. If you receive a lot of large messages or move/delete them a lot, you could easily end up with frequent compacting hence high disk activity, compounded by AV scanning of Thunderbird's filesystem operations. Have you added Tbird's profile folder to your AV's exclusions? If not, you should.

@Wayne: AV cannot be responsible, as I'm not running any AV. I scan occasionally, and haven't had any infections in the last 10 years.
@Stans: rarely. I get about 5-10 messages per day, mostly in the 20-100kByte range. As mentioned above, total profile size is about 16GB, half of which are very old unused local folders.

Btw WhatsApp desktop shows a similar behaviour. Sometimes it writes for no particular reason 3MB/second, which means 10GB per hour or 240GB per day if you don't pay attention. This happens if a contact is active that has a message with a URL to some page; and most of the time the writing does NOT happen. I know this is completely unrelated, but it shows that such bugs can go unnoticed for years, simply because people don't watch the disk writes column in Task Managers all the time. In the long tun, though, it destroys SSDs.

Open Windows resource monitor, disk tab, expand the Disk Activity section, sort on the Write column, widen the File column so you can see filenames (hide other columns if needed)

Wayne, I know resource monitor, but I prefer the Task Manager because it has a column with cumulative writes, as shown above ("byte scrit..." in Thunderbird86GB.png).
For two days now, TB is open and stuck at around 2.3GB. That's ok. But sometimes, in a not predictable way, it goes havoc and writes 86GB in half an hour. Unsafe and dangerous. Some programmer MUST know where this can happen, and why.

If you can get me file names from task manager with the IO rates then good. If not, then TM is not sufficient. Since you know resource monitor then it will be easy for you to get actual file names with IO rates.

Absolutely, if I ever manage to catch TB in the act. As described above, the disk thrashing happens in a very short time, and unfortunately resource monitor does NOT tell me what happens in the past. Yesterday TB wrote 9GB in a few minutes while I was away from my desk.

I am currently coding a proggie that will catch TB in the act. It may take a while, though.

First results, not yet reliable: Thunderbird goes mad when it's connected to a server but there is no further answer. Status bar says "connected to...", and TB writes slightly over 2MB per second to disk.

Here is an excerpt from a run of my diagnostic program. All was fine until a few minutes ago, when Thunderbird went mad for no apparent reason. I had just sent a mail when I noticed the fan making noise, and switching to the diagnostic program it was evident: at 02:40:10 the trouble begins. I closed the inbox, but kept one mail open for reading, and the 3.5MB/second writing stopped. Btw 3.5MB/s means 12.6 GB per hour, or over 300 GB per day - enough to kill the SSD.

Maybe I'm a bit dumb: how do I instruct Resource Monitor to shout when TB has its "moments"? I just watched a little video, and 20 minutes later, TB had written over 10GB to disk without informing me. Resource Monitor just tells me what it is doing RIGHT NOW, no way to look back 10 minutes, and unfortunately TB had stopped the activity already. Is there any way to log TB's activity?

To be clearer: I can see TB's activity in Resource Monitor, but it's a few kBytes per second, for various files. When it goes havoc, we are talking about 3 MegaBytes per second, and unfortunately goes havoc only when I am not staring at the Resource Monitor. Could it be a background process?

Hi again,

I just had the rare occasion to catch Thunderbird in the act (the fan started roaring, that's why I noticed it) with Resource Monitor open and frantically writing to disk, see below: around 10x80 MB every ten seconds. Task Manager confirms it, now TB is at 21,940.023,431 bytes, quite a bit for a mere 13 minutes of CPU time, isn't it? The process started yesterday 13.12.2021 11:48:09, but an hour ago it was still below 10 GB. I stopped the frantic writing by clicking on some subfolders of my two accounts until I saw in Task Manager that TB had calmed down.

Status line said it was downloading message 1 of 1 from my gmail account. There is only one recent message of 28 kBytes.

I watched Resource Monitor while this was happening, and it stoically insisted that there are no writes above a handful of kBytes per second.
IF I was a member of the Mozilla team, with enough experience in C, C++ or whatever you are using, then I would insert a little check at the point where the WriteFile API is being called: does it write more than NMAX bytes? if yes, to which file, and from where has it been called?

Thanks, Wayne, I had a closer look but I can't see any option to show which files Thunderbird is writing to. Besides, it simply doesn't show the disk activity that I see in Task Manager. TM says it's MB/s, and so does the WriteTransferCount item of GetProcessIoCounters.

Btw my OS is Italian, which means that every single item in perf monitor has a name different from what the article mentions. But I'm used to guessing the correspondence, not a big deal.

For clarity, there are two dedicated tools in Windows:

  1. Performance Monitor (where I see NO option to monitor which files are written to disk)
  2. Resource Monitor (to be started from Task Manager, it shows the files but as a few kBytes per second where Task Manager sees MB/s)

Not perfect, but it warns me when TB or WhatsApp Desktop are going havoc. With the latter I know how to trigger the frenetic writing, so it's good for testing my proggie. You may see a virus warning, because the heuristic scanners of many AVs shout foul when they see Assembly code ;-)

What would help me in this phase: if somebody found out which API Thunderbird uses for writing. Is it WriteFile?

I don't know all the kinds of IO that would fall into that specific taskmgr statistic - you'll have to research it.

Thanks, Stans. So this is the explanation by the Windows Club:

"I/O Write Bytes: The number of bytes written in input/output operations generated by the process, including file, network, and device I/Os. I/O Write Bytes directed to CONSOLE (console input object) handles aren’t counted."

Good. There is one more notebook on the home network, but it was switched off while I observed the steady 2MB/s flow of writes. Is Thunderbird "calling home"? What other device could there be, apart from the only disk drive in this notebook?

Calling home with data that's over 10 times the size of your profile folder? Why would it call home then write all that data to disk instead of uploading it for whatever reason? Sounds like a conspiracy theory to me.

Right, Stans. I was joking because I can't see ANY reason to write 10 times the size of my profile folder to disk or to any other "device". And yet, Thunderbird does exactly that, and nobody here takes it seriously. When and why, no idea: so far, I can't reproduce it. But it does happen. How many users are affected? How many SSDs get slowly destroyed?

Btw WhatsApp Desktop does the same. I tracked it down, more or less, to conversations that include links to web pages (not all of them are affected). About 3MB per second, over 250GB per day. It won't stop by itself, but it does stop when you switch to another conversation without links.

Behind such destructive behaviour, there are programmers who open a file for writing, and allow it do so in a loop.

Some related background questions which will help:

  • How many GB of memory is installed on this Windows 7 system? Is it shared memory, i.e. used by the GPU, as many such systems are from the windows 7 era?
  • What is the AV software that you run periodically?
  • What backup software do you run, and does it run full time?

The three key questions about disk IO right now are these: how much disk IO is being done by Thunderbird, and how much disk IO is by other sources (operating system and application programs). We can begin to formulate the next step after the collected data is evaluated. So I'd like to reclarify what data is needed - a full screen of resource manager showing at least top 20-30 file names sorted by disk write IO rate at the time when you are seeing poor performance or high Thunderbird disk IO.

I appreciate this may not be easy to catch. Thanks for hanging in there so we can continue to handle this in a thoughtful and professional manner.

So far it's just the three of us engaging in this report, and neither Wayne nor I are cracking jokes, unless you're referring to silent spectators. What are the chances of Whatsapp and Thunderbird suffering from the exact same bug? This is the only report of its kind I have come across here and on the support forums, which suggests you're the only affected user so far. We have many old reports about high memory and CPU usage, but not this, and it wouldn't have taken long for similar reports to show up when the alleged bug was introduced into TB's code. That seems highly unlikely, don't you think? Nonetheless, let's pursue this further with more data than TM has to offer. That metric displayed by TM is very ambigous at best and lack of official documentation about it isn't helping. That's why we need more data from other tools to bring this to its logical conclusion. One such tool is Process Monitor (aka Procmon). If getting a list of files written to by Thunderbird using Resource Monitor is a challenge, Procmon should help significantly. You can get it here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon and make sure to check out the related links section of that page too. Using the timestamps in the output of your tool, you can filter Procmon's output to display which files were written to. I suggest you leave Resource Monitor running long before you catch Tbird in suspicious action. It's important that Resource Monitor also captures the high disk activity when it happens.

My latest Malwarebytes complete scan found no threats. It's also unlikely IMO that a virus could hijack TB or WA.

What backup software do you run, and does it run full time?
None. I copy archives with important files from time to time to an external disk.

One such tool is Process Monitor (aka Procmon)
ProcMon doesn't find its driver on my machine, bad luck.

I have been using Sysinternals Process Explorer for a while, and it reports the same I/O bytes as Task Manager and my own tool.
OTOH Resource Monitor, the only tool that makes me see file names, does NOT report any significant I/O. It remains at a few kBytes per second, where the other three tools see 2-3 MB per seconds (2360024=172GB), which is in the long run simply too much for an SSD (I keep my notebooks for 8 years and more...).

Re non-disk I/O: yes, there is shared memory with the GPU, but that cannot be the explanation, as both Thunderbird and WhatsApp don't do any grafical acrobatics when they go havoc. They are just writing 2-3 MB/second, almost silently (I can hear the fan a bit more than usual).

I understand that you are hesitant to invest into this, me being the only customer who has reported this so far. As written earlier, hooking the WriteFile API would be one option to track it down, but I understand this is not that easy. OTOH few people ever look at the write I/O column of Task Manager, so the phenomenon might go undetected for quite a while.

I can't reproduce the TB problem, it just happens from time to time, but then it doesn't stop until I exit or change accounts manually.
I can reproduce the WhatsApp problem, but again, Resource Monitor, the only tool that makes me see file names, does NOT report any significant I/O. I know this is weird, sorry for bothering you.

Not sure how helpful this is - another short "run": process with ID 7860 started 34 hours ago (i.e. I restarted TB), and was pretty OK until today, 2:44:40, with a daily average write bytes of 432MB. Then it started writing out of the blue. There is no corresponding activity in my inbox, no mails arrived, nothing. And this time it stopped without my intervention.

I set the cache to zero after discovering the mysterious runs. Which does not necessarily mean that caching is the cause of TB going havoc, of course.

As mentioned above, while Task Manager says TB is writing like hell, Resource Monitor doesn't. Below a run that I was able to see in parallel in Resource Monitor: ZERO activity by Thunderbird. But I heard the disk spinning... no compacting, no download of messages, nada. And this time I couldn't stop it by switching accounts, so I had to close TB. That's what I'll implement in the next version of my tool: close Thunderbird if I don't react within 1 minute. At least, then I can be sure that it doesn't write terabytes to my poor disk while I am absent.

Hi there,

I am still fighting with this bug. My own software alerts me when Thunderbird starts a "run", so it's kind of under control, but still, it's a shame that Thunderbird behaves like this.

Today it had a new heavy run, see below. The fan starts hurling, Task Manager shows a lot of writing activity, while Resource Monitor remains absolutely useless, as mentioned earlier.

During this run, which wrote about 2.5GB before I killed the process in Task Manager, the status line read "Downloading 3 of 140 messages in Important", which happens to be a GMail folder that I have not created myself. It has 2,500 messages. The first 34 are slightly above 1MB, the last 2466 are below 200kBytes, so there is no chance that this folder could be 2.5GB big.

P.S. one more - about 16GB. I had been watching the crappy Eurovision contest with my kids, when I came back to my notebook two hours later, the fan was hurling like hell. No way to stop it, so I had to kill the process once again. Mozilla, you are just lucky that people almost never look at the bytes written column of Task Manager. Sorry if that sounds rude, but this behaviour is not acceptable.

Today it had a new heavy run, see below. The fan starts hurling, Task Manager shows a lot of writing activity, while Resource Monitor remains absolutely useless, as mentioned earlier.

During this run, which wrote about 2.5GB before I killed the process in Task Manager, the status line read "Downloading 3 of 140 messages in Important", which happens to be a GMail folder that I have not created myself. It has 2,500 messages. The first 34 are slightly above 1MB, the last 2466 are below 200kBytes, so there is no chance that this folder could be 2.5GB big.
