Details

From github: https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix/issues/19157.

Steps to reproduce

Install the PWA for meta.discourse.org (no login required) by opening the page in Firefox for Android and pressing "Install" in the three-dots-menu. Use the PWA for a little while. Do something else on the phone, lock the phone, wait roughly 3 hours. Open the PWA by tapping its icon.

Expected behavior

The PWA should open.

Actual behavior

A black screen is displayed.

Additional Information

  • The PWA works on Google Chrome with no issue after inactivity.
  • I disabled battery optimization for Firefox with no luck.

Device information

  • Device vendor / model and Android version: Samsung Galaxy S9, Android 10, One-UI 2.5
  • Firefox for Android version: 88.1.1

Hello. I have this issue with PWAs and regular apps multiple times a day.
I need to close the tab and open the new one to fix the black screen. Refreshing doesn't help.
Xiaomi Mi 11 lite NE.
There is also a related issue https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1812691

Same issue here with Redmi K40/POCO F3 MIUI.

Same issue for me, funnily enough also on a Samsung Galaxy S9

This does not seem to be limited to PWAs.

Probably the most severe and longest unresolved bug I've ever seen on any app! A total deal breaker for anyone trying to use this as a default browser.

Related issue (bugs happened with both PWA from youtube and custom tab for Google Docs):

I've been having this issue off and on for a while. If reproducing this is an issue, it seems to happen more often when I have a number of other apps open, so maybe it has to do with being low on memory or other resources.

I experience this constantly. I can reproduce it pretty rapidly and consistently by switching to a few other apps and then back to the PWA.

Device: Samsung A71
Android version: 13
One UI version: 5.1
Launcher: Nova Launcher

  • I have a previously saved PWA for cohost.org on the launcher.
  • I hit the switch app button and choose "close all".
  • I launch the cohost PWA from an icon on the launcher.
  • I hit the home button.
  • I launch Youtube from an icon on the launcher.
  • I hit the home button.
  • I launch Google Maps from an icon on the launcher.
  • I hit the home button.
  • I launch Signal from an icon on the launcher.
  • I hit the home button.
  • I launch Discord from an icon on the launcher.
  • I hit the home button.
  • I launch Gmail from an icon on the launcher.
  • I hit the home button.
  • I launch Google Photos from an icon on the launcher.
  • I hit the home button.
  • I launch the cohost PWA from an icon on the launcher.

Expected: the web page loads and displays as normal.
Actual: the window is solid black and does not respond to interaction.

This reproduced 3 out of 4 times, with the remaining time giving the expected behaviour. I think that time I didn't wait a few seconds for each app to settle after starting. It's possible to reproduce it with fewer app switches, but the more app switches, the more likely it seems to be to trigger.

I've experienced this bug with every PWA I've installed over the past 2 years. These include:

  • cohost.org
  • mastodon.social
  • reddit.com

This was on both a Moto G7play and a Pixel 6a. Android versions 10, 12-14.

Extensions I have installed:

  • Privacy Badger
  • uBlock Origin

Disabling these does not seem to affect the black screen issue.
