Steps to reproduce:

I go hover over an email to mark it as read or unread. I don't want to read the email, and I should be able to make my selection without having to see the email.

Actual results:

Currently, when I attempt to change the status, it moves me to the email, then I have to change the status.

Expected results:

When I hover over the read/unread icon, I should be able to click that and change the status without opening the email.

Confirming for 113.0a1 (2023-03-25) (64-bit), Win10, gmail-IMAP account.
I'll morph this slightly to point out that clicking the Read status icon actually doesn't do anything, which is a bug in its own right (this works for Starred icon), different from the general problem that clicking any one of those icons in message list also selects the message and should not (as in 102). I've filed that seperately as Bug 1824555.

• Click on the Read status icon of a message, in the Read status column of the message list, and observe the read/unread visual presentation of the message

Actual

• Message gets selected and should not (Bug 1824555).
• Visual read status does not change in any way
  • Icon remains unchanged
  • Message row (usually) does not change between bold/regular to indicate read status
• Enabled/disabled state of respective Mark > Read/Unread menus isn't in sync with the actual status

Expected

• Message should not get selected by just clicking the icon (Bug 1824555).
• Visual status should update instantly:
  • Icon should change
  • Message row should look read/unread (regular/bold)
• Enabled/disabled state of respective menus should be in sync with actual read status

When I look closely I think the icon changes to unread and the row changes to bold, BUT because the message is selected and loaded it is almost immediately marked as read and the icon and bolding revert.
