User Story

I go hover over an email to mark it as read or unread.  I don't want to read the email, and I should be able to make my selection without having to see the email.

Seen on 113.0a1 (2023-03-25) (64-bit), Win10, gmail-IMAP account.

STR

  1. Click on the Read status icon of a message which is not yet selected, in the Read status column of the message list

Actual

  • Message gets selected (thus shown) and should not
  • (Visual/actual read status of the message and respective menus often do
    not change in any way, see Bug 1822622)

Expected

  • As in TB 102, message should not get selected by just clicking the icon

Rationale:

  • Clicking directly on message list icons per se implies that user intends to act on the message without viewing it - otherwise he would have selected it for viewing first.
  • Direct icon clicking may well be used for high-speed, high-volume message handling. Unnecessarily loading each message has a risk of slowing things down and may impact response time.

Approved for beta

Today's daily hasn't yet built and shipped this patch, but I'll likely be able to test it before we promote beta. I'm trusting there will be not be any negative behavior.

112 and 113 both are fixed.

But clicking the "read" icon in 112.0b7 does not change the message state. However, good news, it does work in 113.
