When receiving new emails, the unread badge indicator in the app icon on Windows updates correctly. But after a few seconds the number doubles.
I noticed this happening pretty consistently if I receive another email right after the first count is generated, or if in Gmail the Inobx and Important folders are updated in the Folder Pane, showing the same count of new emails.
The badge in the app icon is also immediately cleared as soon as I interact with a single new message.
Not sure when this started, but it didn't happen for me with 102.

That count on the taskbar is pretty exposed (although I can barely read the number), so should probably fix this soonish.

Do you have imap-js enabled? It reminds me of bug 1818272. It doubled the counter on the macOS dock icon for my Gmail account as well and never happend again for me since imap-js is disabled.

The number in the task bar has nothing to do with the new mail tabs.

Unless it is a recent regression, I feel like this doesn't require urgency when compared to our list of 180+ bugs

I can't prove it, but I believe this is indeed a regression. The badge does count up when new mails arrive, but it doesn't go down when you actually read the mails. It keeps increasing until Thunderbird is started freshly, at which point it resets to zero.
I am on Windows 11 TBird 115.6.0 64 bit
I am seeing the following problem with the taskbar icon badge count:
Messages arrive and are moved to local folders due to rule filters - the new mail count appears correct on local folders and the taskbar badge count is the correct sum of new mails in local folders. == GREAT, AS IT SHOULD BE.
Click on one of the new mails in the local folders and the count goes down by one on the local folders badge count == GREAT, RECENT BUG FIX WORKS. BUT the badge count on the windows taskbar icon stays the same. Should this have not gone down by 1 ?
The badge count on the windows taskbar stays the same until you either "check for new messages" in which case it sets to zero and counts up again BUT ONLY any new mails pulled down with this new mail check.
It also starts at zero when you launch TBird and shows a count of any mail it pulls down on startup.
It's rather unintuitive as to what the badge count on the taskbar icon is meant to show. It is currently showing the mail count of the latest mail pull. And resets to zero to be able to do this for each new mail call.
However if I read mails in this mail pull, the taskbar badge doesn't now agree with the local folder total of new mail and everything becomes rather confusing with the taskbar badge still saying "10" but my local folders only adding up to "8" because I have read two of these mails. If I walked away from my desk and TBird did another timed mail pulldown, then things could get even more confusing because the badge would reset to "none" ( if no new mail existed ) but my local folders would still add up to "8".
I think the developers of TBird need to think what the point of the taskbar number badge actually is - and then explain it to the users.
As a user, I would think it should reflect the total number of unread emails currently in TBird ( if that IS what it is meant to be doing then there is a bug because it's definitely not doing that ).
What it is currently doing seems to be reflecting the amount of new emails received in just the latest mail pull. If that is what it is meant to be doing then there ISN'T a bug BUT I QUESTION the usefulness of such a badge as it gets very confusing comparing the number of the taskbar badge with the number of actual unread mails in TBird.

Even more weird behaviour continuing on from the comment above:
If mail arrives and is NOT filtered into local folders but stays in the POP inbox folder then the taskbar badge count resets to zero if I click away from a local folder to ANY of the server's POP folders. Even if it is not the folder with the new mail in it. AND even if it is a POP folder of ANOTHER DIFFERENT mail server altogether.
I am left thoroughly confused and bemused as to what the count on the taskbar icon badge count is mean to represent ( and when it should decrease OR reset to zero ).
Could a TBird developer please explain what it is meant to represent/do ?
