Description
By default Thunderbird assigns the name of the e-mail address to the main folder. If you give the folder a new name, it is not visible until Thunderbird is restarted.
I am not sure if this only looks like this to the screen reader or if this is a general problem. This is something a sighted person should look at as well.
Steps to reproduce
- Go to the tree view of available folders with TAB and navigate on the main node. For me it is "ali-savas@gmx.de".
- Now go to the context menu and go with arrow up into the settings.
- Now go with TAB to the edit field "account name" and enter something else there. In my case it is "GMX".
- Press CTRL+W to close the settings window.
- Press arrow down as a precaution and then arrow up again.
Result
The old name of the main node is still displayed. In my case "Ali-Savas@gmx.de". If I go into the settings again, I see that the changes I made have been applied. After restarting Thunderbird the new name of the main node is visible.
Expected
The changes should be visible immediately without having to restart Thunderbird.

Might this be Windows specific as I am unable to reproduce this my-self on linux with thunderbird 113.0a1 20230401.
Steps:
- Open Thunderbird, use F6 or shift+F6 to focus the folder tree
- Move up and down with arrow keys and choose any folder
- Press F2, watch the rename dialog to appear, type in the new name and confirm with the enter key.
Results
Focus is moved to the next item in the tree as the rename dialog gets dismissed. Pressing up arrow key to navigate back to the folder I've just renamed makes screen reader to report the new name.
This also works for subfolders, but not if you want to rename the main folder.
Please try the following:
- Open Thunderbird, use F6 or Shift+F6 to activate the folder tree.
- Move up with the up arrow key and select the main folder via "Inbox". In most cases it has the name of the email address.
- Move to the context menu, select "Settings" with up arrow and confirm with Enter.
- Move with TAB to the edit field "Account name" and give the account a new name.
- Close the window with CTRL+W.
The changes for the title bar is already visible, but not yet for the top node in the folder structure. This will only be visible after restarting Thunderbird.

I can reproduce it with these new more accurate steps although I think this is not an accessibility issue as the old name is also displayed on the screen until the Thunderbird is restarted so both screen reader and non screen reader users have the same experience.

Thanks and yes, I've filed this before as bug 1820052. Account name will update all around with a bit of navigation, but not where it matters most, in the folder pane.
