Hello there! I'm filing this ticket just as a heads-up. We are still working on the instructions. I'll circle back once we have them. I'm happy to answer any questions.

One more thing: we may point Linux users who want to download Firefox from www.mozilla.org to Install Firefox on Linux.

Product

Firefox

Select the type of request

Small change to existing article: Install Firefox on Linux

What product version number does this change align with? [REQUIRED]

Firefox 115, unless we need more time to fix bugs.

What is the anticipated release date? [REQUIRED]

If we ride the Firefox 115 train, 2023-07-04. Later otherwise.

What is the proposed deadline for the content to be published? [REQUIRED]

Same day as the go-live of the target release.

Please include any related JIRA/Github/Bugzilla tickets, documentation, demos or practical use cases. [REQUIRED]

Meta-bug: bug firefox-deb-repackage
Additional context: FFXP-2363

Please add instructions for testing or links to any design assets or visuals. [REQUIRED]

No visuals needed. Instructions are still to be determined. They will be provided after bug 1826540 is done.

Does the content need to be localized in any languages outside of our priority locales (yes or no)?

Note: Minimum of 10 days required for translation requests

Yes, please.

Does the content require legal review (yes or no)?

No.

Is the content embargoed (yes or no)?

No.

Hello there! Instructions are now publicly available on the Nightly blog post[1]. In the end, we didn't ride the 115 train. We're still waiting to hear back from the Nightly community. If nothing major is found, then it will ride the 122 one.

Is there any additional information I should provide?

Oops, sorry, I made a typo. I meant the 121 one. It's currently in Nightly.

Status update: while we shipped Nightly and Beta in 121, we will go to release in 122 in order to coordinate effort. Let me know if I can help.

In [1], the Bedrock team would to get the URL of the SUMO page. Would it be possible to get it before it's published, Lucas?

Here's the in-product redirect to the current "Install Firefox on Linux" (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux) article. We’ll be updating it to include the new instructions for the deb package changes coming with V122.

Please let me know once you have the new instructions so I can start a draft for the content update.

Thanks! My bad, I had forgotten I wrote that exact thing in comment 0 😅⬇️ Let's do that!

We published the instructions at [1]. We should just remove "nightly" from the instructions and we should be all set. I'll be happy to review the draft.

Fx122.0 goes live next week on 2024-01-23.
We would like to include a link to this in the release notes once it's live.

Here’s the link for the 'Install Firefox .deb package for Debian-based distributions' section, which will be active once the article goes live.

Thank you Lucas! Should we schedule the publishing either early on Jan 23rd or just on Jan 22nd? (I don't know what the standard procedure is, it's the first time I request a change in SUMO 🙂)

Flags: needinfo?(lsiebert)

I typically handle publishing early on the release date, but if it helps, I can get it done the day before, right before I finish up for the day. Just let me know what suits you best!

If nothing is blocking you from publishing the day before, I can update the release note to include it before Fx122 go-live.
Otherwise, I can edit the release note afterward to avoid including a link that won't resolve.

Note: I update the release note any to include the link from Comment 9.
It was pointed out to me that it would resolve anyway since the page exists.

This looks great! Thank you Lucas for getting the instructions live right on time 👍

I just noticed a small nit: could we make a dedicated header for the data migration. Looking at [1], it feels it's part of the localization steps which is not the case 🙂

Another nit I just found: step 4 should be before step 2.

  1. Import the Mozilla APT repository signing key:
    wget -q https://packages.mozilla.org/apt/repo-signing-key.gpg -O-
  1. If you do not have wget installed, you can install it with:
    sudo apt-get install wget

The updates have gone live! A big shoutout to Paul for all the help! Check them out here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux.

Awesome, thank you so much Lucas! It all looks good to me. We may have some follow-up items depending on the community feedback but I'll open a new bug for that.
