User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/113.0

Steps to reproduce:

In any OS, select UI colors at the system options level. When "Use System Colors" is selected in Thunderbird, expect those system colors to be used wherever possible.

Actual results:

System color use is very inconsistent in 115, etc.

Expected results:

When "Use System Colors" is selected in Thunderbird, expect those system colors to be used wherever possible.

Numerous Bugs & Enhancement requests (1454946 CSS, 1509242 CSS, 1643828 CSS, 1677296 DOM/HTML, 1686419 CSS, 1695341 CSS, etc.) to correct problems / make UI more consistent with OS settings.

I got very annoyed with the new thunderbird colors and tried to make a theme that actually uses the system colors. Feel free to try it out: https://github.com/de-vri-es/thunderbird-real-system-theme

If it doesn't work properly, you may need to switch to the built-in system theme and then to this theme. There seems to be some weird persisting caching of system colors that you can reset that way.

For users who have trouble seeing blue, and/or reduce blue on their monitors, the default blue highlights can be unreadable, and using system colors would be better.

Allowing users who have picked other highlight colors in system prefs to carry these into Þb would help.

It's definitely in this range on February 8th: https://hg.mozilla.org/comm-central/pushloghtml?fromchange=1f4a91a45caa94de0dd4bc15e466ae9b2ef75a83&tochange=911610dccd132dceae252df0547592a732bfb5ec

Which includes a change to match bug 1814327, "Stop using the OS primary/accent color" which is precisely the problem, it doesn't respect OS color settings!

Seeming duplicates include:

bug 1843646 which was "Resolved Won'tfix" because "This was a deliberate design decision to better respect and maintain the Thunderbird Design System and visual identity consistent across OSs and DEs." ... I'm not sure why that should override users' prefs and accessibility needs.

bug 1847588.

P.S. Setting system theme - auto is now working for me.

Does bug 1843646 describe your issue?

And if not ...

When "Use System Colors" is selected in Thunderbird, expect those system colors to be used wherever possible.

Please give specific examples

In response to comment 6: Yes, generally. Primarily, if I specify Windows dark mode, then I expect a dark background and light text. TB does comply with that. However, (in Windows), I have selected slider, border, etc. colors (and sizes) which are less critical but still would help me use the app.

In Windows 11, I just reviewed my "personalization" and "accessibility" settings and they do not allow changing the scroll bar size or color, only an "accent" color. I probably have or had some 3rd party theme on Windows 10 that allowed that. So, TB seems to comply with Windows 11 dark mode.
There is a related problem in dark mode such that the foreground (text) color cannot be changed from white.
