Steps to reproduce:

Restart Phone.
Set alarm for next minute.
Go to m.youtube.com and begin playing a video.
Alarm popup pauses video, after dismissing (Snooze/Stop) video does not resume but endlessly loads. Reloading page does not fix issue. Loading bar never fully completes. This carries over into other tabs.

Videos will still play on separate apps such as Youtube or Chrome.

The only fix I know of is to reset the phone.
I have tested this with all my extensions disabled. It replicates on my phone following these steps every time.

Actual results:

Video playback on Firefox no longer works.

The video resumes and other videos load.

Hi, I tried this on two separate devices running Android 13 and wasn't able to repro. Could you share the model phone you're using? Which alarm app and launcher are you using?

I'm curious if you would have the same behavior if playback is muted when the alarm goes off, or if you have a silent alarm (or both). Would you be able to test on nightly, which should be available on the default app store?

I am using a Pixel 7 Pro. The standard Google alarm, and I am using Nova Launcher. I am using Nightly already.

I don't know about muted, but if playback is paused before the alarm goes off nothing interrupts it.

Currently, I experience this issue as stated. The video pauses and then no longer plays or loads.
If I do this in Private Browsing and close the tab (so I have no tabs, so the data for the Private Browsing is cleared) and re-open Youtube it will load. I wonder if there is something in the open session that is causing the issue. (Though as I continue to test while writing this - this is no longer the case. Just providing as much detail as possible to try and track this down!)

I tried it again with my Media Volume turned off and it worked the same as stated. The alarm pauses the video.

I did a fresh install of Nightly on my Pixel XL 2 running Android 10 and the alarm came and went and the video continued to play. I even installed my standard add-ons (uBlock Origin, Video Background Play Fix, Google Search Fixer) and it still worked as intended. But that is running Android 10 (with Google Alarm and Nova Launcher). My Pixel 7 Pro is running Android 13.

I also encounter this same issue repeatedly when following these steps.

1: Connect a Bluetooth device that is using audio.
2: Be playing Youtube video (or any kind of video playback, Youtube is just the easiest example)
3: Turn off the Bluetooth device/turn off Bluetooth so the device disconnects.
4: Playback will pause and encounter the same stuck state as in the example above with the alarm.

I saw my father last week. I had given him a new phone (Pixel 6A) and set it up for him. He later called asking me how to reset the phone (because the power button no longer brings up the power menu on Android.)

He asked me how to reset the phone because his Firefox has issues loading videos as I described here. I know this issue can occur without Alarms, but I don't know how to show that repeatedly. If it can be solved, I would expect/hope it would resolve the issue in all cases.

It's anecdotal but it's another example of this issue. I am surprised no one else has come forward with this issue, though I am guessing not many use Firefox for Youtube playback as I do.

It happens on YouTube as well as TikTok and most other web video players. Why has nobody looked at this yet?

I'm also experiencing this bug. I have a Pixel 7 running Android 16, Firefox version 144.0.2.

I've had problems with videos on both Reddit and Youtube in Firefox. Same behavior as originally reported: if an alarm goes off while a video is playing, the video cannot be resumed after snoozing or cancelling the alarm. It just loads endlessly. If I pause the video right before the alarm goes off, I can continue playing the video after silencing the alarm.

Force-quitting Firefox and reopening it will fix the broken videos for me, but this is pretty annoying.

This is such a frustrating bug that's been present for over a year with no fix. It's making Firefox on Android so awful to use. Every day I have to force stop the app multiple times when an alarm goes off while a video is playing. Nothing fixes the problem until I force stop the app. Only for it to happen again and again whenever an alarm goes off.

I suspect this might be due to a similar issue as in bug 1937317 (AudioSink/clock not being restarted properly, or cubeb needing to reinit the stream?) :kinetik, would you have any ideas here?

I had forgotten the last step to include other info, so I re-uploaded after checking the boxes.

We can see where cubeb stops the stream at 15.036s here with:

cubeb_aaudio.cpp:1669:STOPPING stream 0x713bedd080: 3 (in: AAUDIO_STREAM_STATE_UNINITIALIZED out: AAUDIO_STREAM_STATE_STARTED)

At 17.388s we see:

cubeb_aaudio.cpp:1553:STARTING stream 0x713bedd080: 1 (0 6)

I'm not sure whether the earlier AAUDIO_STREAM_STATE_UNINITIALIZED in this context indicates a failure state we should be handling or if this is part of normal recovery. There are a large number of cubeb_aaudio.cpp:1797: Not timing info yet messages following, with the final message for this stream being (cubeb) aaudio output data cb on stream 0x713bedd080: state 4 (3), num_frames: 4800 at 18.040s though the profile continues for another 12 seconds or so.

Also a Pixel (8a), has persisted for months across multiple Android versions and multiple firefox versions, happens with both audio and video across basically every site and player implementation and for anything that paused playback.

I can repro this 100% of the time so if anyone wants to adb into my phone remotely I'm happy to provide that to help debug. Once it happens I can't play the video in other tabs and I believe I can't play it in private mode either after the failure, which imo is a little concerning.

I can reproduce it with my Google Pixel 7 Pro. YouTube running in Firefox when an alarm goes of IT completely freezes and i have to disable the app and reenable it.

Hello, just want to update this bug. The issue now also occurs if I disconnect my Bluetooth headphone while a video is playing. Similar to the alarm, I'd have to force stop Firefox for videos to load again. Not sure if there will be a fix soon but the number of times this bug happens daily is increasing and makes it just more frustrating to use Firefox on Android.

Are you able to test with a recent Firefox beta build, please? We've landed audio fixes recently that may address this, so it'd be good to have you test those and confirm whether they solve this particular issue.

If you're still able to reproduce this with Firefox beta, please capture fresh logs following Alastor's instructions in comment 14 and I'll take a closer look.

I can try out the Beta build for some time, and see if it occurs there. Right now I tried it on both versions and both are fine, but the bug still resurfaces in the stable version, so it's not fully clear to me if the beta build is good or hasn't unmasked the issue yet.

I'll need to try it for a period of time today, and report back if I reproduce it
