1841147 - Collapsed mail threads do not have a "new" indicator when a new unread mail arrives in that thread

• Collapse mail thread
• Receive e-mail in that thread

Actual results:

• There is no visual indication a new, unread mail exists in the thread

Expected results:

• There should be a clear visual indicator there is a new mail in the collapsed thread

In 115.5.2 as in 121.0b6 a collapsed parent card with unread messages appears with underlined text elements. Is it possible or planed that the parent element gets the same unread message indicators like in beta?

Which visual indication are you expecting?
Is this in cards view or table view?
Does version 128 have the same issue?

In TB 129.0b6 (64-bit) a new message received in a thread appears hidden as per attached in Table view while the conversation appears underscored. That is not convenient, the new message shall simply appears in the list as unread like any other unread message.

All unread message received in conversation shall appear listed and in unread status. That would the natural and intuitive expectation from end-users. We should be able to see the unread message and to select it in one click to see the content in Preview pane.

Currently it requires extra cognitive step to realise that a new message has arrived and is hidden and requires to unfold the thread first to even see the msg and click again on it to access its content... Way too cumbersome when your receive a lot of new message in conversation per day. The dev team does not see/experienced it themself?

In TB 129.0b6 (64-bit), in card view the same conversation with unread message appears like attached. Again the new message is hidden in conversation with no indication a new message was received. You have to manually unfold the conversation to check!!!

Again the expectation here would be new message to show directly in the list as unread message (Black bold stays unread) as part of the conversation. Either the conversation unfolded by default if it contains unread msg or to unfold (short term? As a quick fix) only the unread msg (long term solution? As part of the back-end end-database revamping)

New stable version of TB cannot be deployed before this issue is fixed because it causes new messages to be missed by end-users if not properly handled by end-user cognitive effort.

This is a real daily annoyance/regression.

Unread message shall always be visible in the message list, not kept hidden within a folded conversation.

Hope that help understanding the issue better.

Are you referencing the multimessage view that appears when you select a thread? Which is the same panel used to display messages.
Or are you referencing the thread pane where all the messages are listed?

If it's the multimessage view, then yes, that list needs a visual indicator for new and unread messages.

For table view we've always used the underline indicator.
For cards view that's a new UI paradigm we didn't have before.

We definitely want to improve things nonetheless.

I'll let jvisser confirm for himself, but myself I am refereeing to the message List Pane (as per attachments sent previously) that can either be displayed in Table View or Card View (not the Message Preview Pane, my understanding is this one is still under re-work for improvements, but the same issue may apply to it, to take into consideration).

This is really not convenient and not really intuitive, new message should always be visible (not be hidden) by default and made directly accessible in the Message List as unread message. Bold text status and others... like any other unread message...

I understand but same issue here. This needs improvement the unread message should simply appear in the list of messages and not be hidden invisible behind folded thread. One could imagine that if the thread is closed the unread message would still be visible in the thread directly in the list. Does that make sense?

Yes please improve :-)
Because currently it is really easy to miss new received messages as they are simply hidden by default, which sometime lead to awkward situation in the business world :-)

Looks like a duplicate of bug 242300.

It doesn't appear to be a regression, not related to Supernova and 102 is also affected as are all prior version.

For the record: For cards view, a "new message in thread" indicator was implemented in bug 1870376. That recently got improved in bug 1910474. Table view hasn't been improved, that's bug 242300.
