Steps to reproduce:
Enable threaded email view
Actual results:
The threads only show the received email. If I reply to one of the messages from the email thread, my reply is not shown as part of the thread.
Expected results:
I want the option to see my responses as part of the email thread.

You can get your desired behavior by creating a saved search folder.
- In the folder pane, right click on the account and select 'Search Messages...'
- From the 'Search for messages in:" dropdown, select your inbox.
- Uncheck 'Search subfolders'
- Click 'Save as Search Folder' at the bottom.
- Give your new saved search folder a name (for example, Combined).
- Click 'Choose...', select your Sent folder, and click OK. (Next to "Select the folders to search:" you should see '2 folders chosen')
- Click 'Create'.
Now you have a folder that you can use instead of your inbox. All sent messages will show up in their respective threads.

IMHO that's a partial work around, not a solution.
I'd expect to see always the full thread even if messages are stored on folders other than Inbox and sent.

One could of course include those other folders in the saved search, but I think I get it. You want to see only the messages that are part of already visible conversations, not threads or messages that are completely contained in the other folders. Is that right?
I agree that having a 'Group conversations together' option in Settings would be a welcome change to Thunderbird. It actually would probably need to be a setting available to each folder because I wouldn't want my Sent folder to show messages I receive, for example.

Yes, in other words I could think of 3 possible "view":
by message: no threading
by thread: the actual default behavior, it show the thread with the messages contained in the current folder
by cross folder thread / group conversation together (just name it how you like it): alway show the entire conversation.
The last one is how Zimbra Classi UI builds conversations and is what I'm looking for.
I tell you my use case to better understand:
let's say I replay 10 times on the same thread for a total of 20 messages.
No matter if I open the thread from the sent folder or the Inbox, I shall always see al the messages.
I move the conversation to a specific folder named "customer" to archive it (in 1 step).
Later on I get a reply for the same thread.
Actually there will be 1 message in the Inbox folder but I'll see the whole thread.
I don't have to search around to find the previous messages.
