Details

Using beta 116.0b7
Windows OS

  • View > Folders > Unified
  • For 'Unified' folder eg: Inbox
  • Sort by does not automatically follow the Sort by preference set up when using 'All'
  • Set 'Sort by' > 'Date', 'Ascending' and 'Unthreaded'.

Expected Results
The 'Unified Inbox' folder sorts as desired 'Date', 'Ascending' and 'Unthreaded' and newest email is at the bottom.
Focus is automatically at the bottom on newest mail.

Actual Results
The 'Unified Inbox' folder sorts as desired 'Date', 'Ascending' and 'Unthreaded' and newest email is at the bottom.
However, the focus is automatically at the top on the oldest mail - not desired nor expected.

Additional:
If you set :

  • For 'Unified' folder eg: Inbox
  • Set 'Sort by' > 'Date', 'Descending' and 'Unthreaded'.
  • Newest mail is at the top and focus is at the top
All works ok as expected using 'descending'.

Geoff, could you check if we're not respecting sorting in synthetic views?

This bug also affects Thunderbird 115, when I quit Thunderbird I have this view:

https://i.imgur.com/1yrEYuS.png

When I restart TB, it's starting on top, oldest messages first:

It was not the case on Thunderbird 102 and previous.

I can confirm that behaviour even when switching folders.

I have the mails sorted by Date (oldest messages first). I scroll all the way down to the newest message and select it. When I now switch to another folder and back, the viewpoint in the message list moves to the top, that is the message list shows me the oldest messages. I have to scroll all the way down to continue working.

Thunderbird 115.3.1 (64-bit)
Linux Mint 21.2

According to release notes in 115.4.1
'Fixed' - 'Message list did not automatically scroll to new messages when switching folders'

But reports in Support Forum are not confirming this.

I'll keep track of any comments to see if there are more incidents.

It does not seem to matter whether using Unified Folders or not - same problem

I deliberately set one of my folder to sort ascending.
New mail got filtered to that folder, but display did not scroll down to bottom, it remained focused on last position of prevously downloaded mail.

Summary: Unified folders eg: Inbox Sort by > Date, Ascending, Unthreaded - incorrectly has focus on oldest mail at top → Standard and Unified folders eg: Inbox Sort by > Date, Ascending, Unthreaded - incorrectly has focus on oldest mail at top

Currently if using 'Sort by' > 'Ascending'
use the following as a work around:
Either: click twice on the 'Date' column header to force the sort to focus on newest mail at bottom.
OR : if you have selected any email in Message List use 'Ctrl'+End' keys on keyboard to force scroll to bottom.
Or select another another folder and then reselect original folder

Could anyone experiencing faulty scrolling please test if setting layout.css.scroll-anchoring.enabled to false helps?
