One of the main advantages of using an email client over the browser is that the client constantly checks for new mails and then notifies its user, requiring no interaction.
Every other email client I've used before comes with this functionality. I was surprised to find out that Thunderbird does not. There's even a whole other app that 'hacks around this' called Birdtray or an extension, but such a basic functionality should not require half-working hacks, extensions or additional apps.
Please consider adding support for optionally running Thunderbird in the background.
A combination of bug 1627479 with "startup minimized", bug 1816256.

Just to be clear, by 'running in the background', I don't necessarily mean 'run minimized as a tray icon'. All it needs to do is be able to sync emails in the background (while closed, no window) and notify the user.
