Sub-Folders show as having new messages, but then don't list the new messages - after sleep with server side filters

I let my computer sleep overnight with Thunderbird running and a sub-folder selected - the sub-folder gets new mailed filtered to it.
When I then woke up the computer in the morning, the folder had new mail, but it failed to display the new messages in the message list, scrolling either way did not help.
There's no error messages on the error console.
I think I've seen this a few times over the last few days, maybe not always with going to sleep.
To get the messages to show up, I have to select a different folder and then go back to the previous one.

I think these STR are consistent:
- Have a folder (e.g. gmail) which gets new mail filtered into it server side (the inbox may be enough, but I don't know for sure).
- Select the folder in Thunderbird.
- Make the computer go to sleep for a while, and that new mail should be received into the folder.
- Come back later
Expected Results
=> The message list updates and the new messages can be seen.
Actual Results
=> The folder list indicates there are new messages, but these are not displayed in the message list.

I'm pretty sure this only applies to sub-folders, i.e. not the inbox folder. These folders do have "When getting new messages for this account, always check this folder" checked as well.

Twice today this has happened to me whilst my computer has been awake and not asleep.
It seems an alternate way of "fixing" this is to select a message in the folder, i.e. something to trigger a network connection.

Are you able to reproduce this with a normal IMAP account (not OAUTH)?

I don't have any accounts without OAUTH where I can filter to a folder on the server.

I've just had the case where I read emails in a folder. I then suspected I had new emails, so I clicked the "Get Messages" button. The folder list highlighted that there's 4 new messages in the folder, but did not update the message list pane.
Repeated get messages doesn't update it. I have to select a different message or a different folder.

Is this happening in version 128?
Is it only with an addon?

Yes, it happens all the time.

No.
I'm guessing it is the server side filtering that is somehow confusing Thunderbird. It knows there's a new message there (as the count has changed) but doesn't actually refresh the folder contents.

I am also experiencing a problem where messenger.messages.onNewMailReceived is only calling my listener for a small fraction of messages. I am working through the "Hello World" Extension Tutorial. The example code in background.js is supposed to make a list of all messages that Thunderbird receives. Messages that I send to myself as tests almost always fail to call the onNewMailReceived listener. Some of the messages from outside senders call the listener.
I am testing with an IMAP server having SSL/TLS connection security and normal password authentication method. I have a set of Thunderbird message filters which move almost all messages out of the IMAP Inbox into sub-folders right away. Whether I have Thunderbird's UI focus on the IMAP Inbox folder or on the subfolder where my test messages get directed seems to make no difference.
I am running Thunderbird 128.7.0esr (64-bit) on macOS Sonoma 14.7.3 (23H417). I observe the same results whether I have Thunderbird's notifications turned on or off. Note that macOS asserts control over whether to pass app notifications on to the user, so I am not sure if Thunderbird even knows whether or not its notifications are turned on.
Expected behaviour: the messenger.messages.onNewMailReceived listener gets called for every single email message which arrives at my Thunderbird client while the listener is active.
