User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:120.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/120.0
Steps to reproduce:
- I use Firefox to display the freenet inbox. Inbox(1) - and the e-mail are displayed
- I log out of freenet and close Firefox
- Then I start Thunderbird 115 (the freenet account is configured as IMAP)
- The mail is displayed in my inbox
- I delete the mail with SHIFT+DEL
- The e-mail disappears from the inbox
- I start Firefox again and log in to my freenet account
- I see Inbox (1) and no e-mail although the counter still shows 1 message
- Then I start a 2nd Thunderbird 115 where the freenet account is configured as POP3
- the deleted e-mail is downloaded and displayed in the inbox of the 2nd Thunderbird
If I do the same procedure with Thunderbird 102, the message is deleted correctly with SHIFT+DEL via IMAP.
Actual results:
The e-mail is not deleted correctly via IMAP.
With Firefox I can no longer see the e-mail after logging in to freenet (as if it had been deleted) but the counter in the inbox still shows me that there is a message.
The e-mail can be retrieved via POP3 despite being deleted.
Expected results:
The e-mail should be deleted correctly with Thunderbird 115 via IMAP, as Thunderbird 102 does.

Being a pop account, deleting messages should but unrelated to your account.
Are you seeing this with the most recent update of version 115?
Current Thunderbird version is 115.8.1 (64-bit) under Linux.
The problem with SHIFT + DEL still exists.
If I delete ONLY with DEL the mails go to the trash.
Afterwards I can delete the mails in the trash with DEL.
However, I want to save myself the detour via the recycle bin and delete the mails immediately with SHIFT + DEL.
This does not work via IMAP!
I have just tried it with my Freenet account and with my Vodafone account. The emails disappear under Thunderbird, but the emails are still there with the mail provider.
If I now start another instance of Thunderbird where the mail account is configured as POP3, the mails that were previously deleted with SHIFT + DEL are now downloaded and displayed in the inbox.

It appears that mcse-2000 performed the SHIFT-DEL operation on the IMAP account.
The POP account is a second Thunderbird for confirmation.
Seems like a "freenet" specific problem to me.
Does "freenet" mean the following?
https://email.freenet.de/
Yes, "freenet" means "https://email.freenet.de/"
But I have the problem not only with freenet but also with my inbox at Vodafone (https://login.vodafonemail.de/) and the problem with SHIFT + DEL no longer works since Thunderbird 115.
Before Thunderbird 115 I used Thunderbird 102 and always deleted with SHIFT+DEL. It also worked with version 102.
Works for me in 124.0b5 and 115.8.1 on Windows 11 with POP (gmail) - but I don't use all those other things (freenet, zenix, etc.) I shut down TB and restarted and the mail did not reappear in inbox or trash.
It also works with POP3 because you download the mail with POP3 and then delete it locally.
With IMAP it no longer works since version 115, but I had also specified this every time!
If you want to reproduce it, you have to set up Thunderbird with IMAP.

This means that the e-mail has been successfully marked as deleted and Freenet knows this because they no longer display the e-mail.
- Then I start a 2nd Thunderbird 115 where the freenet account is configured as POP3
- the deleted e-mail is downloaded and displayed in the inbox of the 2nd Thunderbird
And they still deliver the e-mail with the deleted flag via POP3. There is actually nothing we can do about this in TB.
But that's not the whole story. I can confirm that under these circumstances TB (daily) does not send an EXPUNGE command to the server when leaving the inbox, even though [X] Clean up (Expunge) inbox on exit is enabled. Only when the TB closes the connection (e.g. when exiting TB) does the server receive the Expunge command.
@Gene: is that the intended?

The "on exit" for "expunge inbox" and "empty trash" (under Server Settings/Message Storage) mean on exiting/shutting down TB, not exiting or moving the folder selection off of the folder itself. I'm sure that's what it means for empty trash since I was just looking at that. But not 100% sure about the expunge action, but I would bet it is...
...I just check it and expunge of Inbox only occurs on exit from TB, as I expected (which is the same a for empty of trash on "exit").
And they still deliver the e-mail with the deleted flag via POP3. There is actually nothing we can do about this in TB.
Yes, that is correct. When you do shift-delete on a message in an imap folder, it just marks the message with the imap \deleted flag. The message is still present in the imap mailbox. A pop server looking at that same mailbox may or may not look at the imap flags set on the folder such as the the \deleted and \seen flags and TB has no say in this. So the pop server may or may not delivery the message.
Otherwise, I don't completely understand what the bug is here. If you shift-delete the message and it get marked deleted, to any imap client like TB it should remain invisible. If it doesn't remain invisible in an imap client, then something is wrong. Either it didn't get marked \delete or the client is ignoring the \deleted flag and showing the message anyhow, or the server has somehow removed the \deleted flag.
If the report would describe the bug again without references to pop server or webmail, maybe it would be clearer as to what the problem is. Also, it would be good to know the delete method the reporter has configured for TB in server settings:
- Move to trash on delete
- Just mark as deleted
- Delete immediately.

Hello,
the TB in server settings is Move to trash on delete.
But i but I now understand when my problem arose.
Thunderbird 115 on Linux Mint sometimes hangs when closing Thunderbird. I only notice it when I want to shut down the PC. Then I get a warning that Thunderbird is still running in the background and I can only kill the process.
I just tried it, deleted an e-mail with SHIFT+DEL and killed Thunderbird 3 minutes later. Then I was able to download the e-mail with POP3.
If I delete an e-mail with Thunderbird with IMAP using SHIFT+DEL and then close Thunderbird normal, the e-mail is really deleted and can no longer be downloaded with POP3.
The first versions of Thunderbird 115 could not always be closed normally (I don't know what a bug). Currently I have TB 115.9.0 x64 with Linux Mint 21.3.

So you shutdown TB and then restarted Mint. But TB was still running and didn't actually shutdown, accouding to Mint? Just want to know the exact steps you did.
I just tried it, deleted an e-mail with SHIFT+DEL and killed Thunderbird 3 minutes later. Then I was able to download the e-mail with POP3.
Were you deleting a message in Inbox or from another folder? Also, do you have the Server Setting "Expunge Inbox on exit" configured? If "Expunge Inbox on exit" is NOT configured, what you are seeing (message still present in Inbox as seen by the POP server [and maybe webmail]) would be expected.
If "Expunge Inbox on exit" IS set, the message should be expunged from imap Inbox on TB shutdown. If you still see it with POP with "expunge on exit" set, that is a bug.
If I delete an e-mail with Thunderbird with IMAP using SHIFT+DEL and then close Thunderbird normal, the e-mail is really deleted and can no longer be downloaded with POP3.
Is the only difference between your 1st shutdown methods is the first one you wait 3 minutes and this one (2nd one) you shut down immediately? Is that what you mean by "close TB normal"?
The first versions of Thunderbird 115 could not always be closed normally (I don't know what a bug). Currently I have TB 115.9.0 x64 with Linux Mint 21.3.
What do you mean by "first version"? Are you referring to 115.0.0? Maybe there was a shutdown bug then but I don't know for sure.
I also have 115.9.0 on kubuntu 22.04 and it shuts down OK, AFAICT.
However, 115.10.0 definitely has a shutdown bug so don't upgrade to 115.10.0 if Mint offers it!! Instead wait for 115.10.1. (Re: Bug 1891889).
