Steps to reproduce:

Set "open message in new tab"

Actual results:

first, the new tab does not take the focus
Second opening a message already open in a tab should focus that previous tab instead of opening a new tab

Expected results:

Open a new tab only if required and take the focus

Status: UNCONFIRMED → RESOLVED

as per 1886653, Changing mail.tabs.loadInBackground to true solves the focus problem.
What about the duplicate tabs problem ? Sall I open a new bug or enhancement ?

That would be for another bug report yes. Not sure if I'd consider that a bug.

Well, I don't see any reason why someone would open a second (or more) tab to read the same email.
