Bug 1877326 introduced a nice feature that locks in place the splitter for the message pane when the application window is resized.
We should spend some time in improving the calculation and responsiveness of that code in order to remove (or reduce as much as possible) some jarring jumps of those pane elements at the beginning and the end of the resize action.
