Steps to reproduce:
- open multiple apps/programs, with Thunderbird not in foreground
- Receive a new email notification and click on it
Actual results:
Thunderhird window is not taken to foreground. The selected email is correctly open, but the main app window won’t be focused, remains behind other apps
Expected results:
The mail is opened and Thunderbird is taken to foreground.
This should have been fixed in bug 1863798. The QA people confirmed that is was working.
Unfortunately that is not the case. The issue can be reproduced in Windows 11 24H2. But it works fine in Windows 23H2 or previous versions. 24H2 is currently available via Insider Preview channel and it’s the version new Copilot+ PCs ship with. Therefore, as soon as the new Windows release will start rolling out to more people, it won’t work again. Side note: other apps such as Telegram Desktop have the same issue, while native WinUI/UWP apps work fine

Perhaps it's a bug in 24H2 then?
Do you see it in Firefox notifications as well?

This is most likely either a change or a bug in the notification stack for Windows 24H2. The same issue happens in Firefox indeed, and seems to affect all Win32 apps. But it works perfectly fine with UWP/WinUI apps. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find some relevant change in the Microsoft documention. I also have no clue how to further escalate this to Microsoft, if this is the case.

Windows 11 24H2 has now been rolled out to users. Did they fix this?

The issue remains. It also affects multiple Win32 apps that rely on QT, as well as Firefox.
The biggest issue related to this is that
- Native Windows notifications do not work properly on click
And - Custom Thunderbird notifications do not respect Focus Mode settings (Quiet hours / Do Not Disturb and so on).
Suggested workaround: Add an option for Thunderbird custom notifications to respect Windows Focus mode, without defaulting to Windows native notifications.

I just updated my Windows 11 on August 13th, version 24H2 OS build 26100.4946, and now clicking on a notification brings Thunderbird up to the foreground correctly.

This is indeed fixed with the latest Windows build version. Turns out it was of course an issue with Windows.
